In a recent discussion, James Gunn and Peter Safran shared insights about their vision for the DC Universe (DCU).During this conversation, Gunn revealed that the casting of Jason Momoa as Lobo was an integral part of their strategy from the outset of the DCU.
The DCU’s formal announcement was made on October 25, 2022, with Gunn and Safran appointed as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. This marked a pivotal moment as they initiated a reboot, distancing themselves from past projects such as Man of Steel (2013), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), Batman v Superman (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), Suicide Squad (2016), and Justice League (2017).Initially, Henry Cavill was expected to reprise his role in a new Superman film; however, the duo opted for a fresh direction with a new younger Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet. Despite the significant changes, one beloved character from the former DCEU will continue within the DCU, and Gunn confirmed that this was part of the grand plan from the beginning.
As Aquaman, Momoa has made a significant impact in the DCEU, starring in both Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).Now, in this revamped universe, he is ready to step into the shoes of Lobo, famed anti-hero of the DC comics. Gunn recounted a humorous exchange regarding Momoa’s eagerness for this role, stating, “Jason was literally the first text I got after DC Studios was announced, ”with Momoa enthusiastically texting, “‘Lobo baby’ with ten billion exclamation points.”This enthusiasm played a significant role in the decision, revealing that casting him as Lobo was always on the agenda.
However, fans hoping for an immediate reveal of Momoa’s Lobo look will need to temper their expectations, as Gunn acknowledged that it might take some time before visuals are shared, remarking, “It’s probably going to be a while, to be frank.“
Momoa’s proactive approach to securing the role is unsurprising; he has been vocal about his admiration for Lobo. On his Instagram, he reflected on his lifelong desire to portray the character, stating, “So Lobo was…I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo.”In an earlier interview, he described Lobo as “the perfect role”for him. Following this enthusiasm, Gunn welcomed him by commenting on his post with a friendly, “Welcome, my friend”alongside a motorcycle emoji.
While promoting Aquaman in 2023, Momoa mentioned that he originally auditioned for the role of Batman, but ultimately realized the character was not fit for him. He was hopeful about the possibility of playing Lobo but was cast as Aquaman instead, a role he ultimately embraced despite his strong affinity for Lobo.
Momoa’s performance as Aquaman was widely praised, yet it’s clear his passion lies with Lobo. He even noted that he needed convincing to see himself as Aquaman until it was explained how suitable he would be for the role. Now, as he steps into the role of Lobo, expectations are high. Fans are eager to see his interpretation of this iconic character, especially since he has the rugged charm and physicality that Lobo embodies.
Upcoming appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, and there are hopes that ultimately, Momoa will receive his own dedicated film or series, as he seems destined to portray this character.
