James Gunn Confirms Krypto the Superdog’s Role in the Upcoming Superman Movie

James Gunn recently announced on social media that the highly anticipated 2025 DC film will not only feature Superman but also the beloved Kryptonian canine, Krypto. In an Instagram post dated October 15, Gunn unveiled a still image of Krypto sitting alongside David Corenswet’s take on the iconic superhero, both enjoying a breathtaking view of Earth from space.

In his caption, Gunn shared how Krypto’s character in the upcoming Superman film draws inspiration from his dog, Ozu. He recounted the journey of adopting Ozu while he was working on the film’s script, describing the initial challenges they faced due to Ozu’s difficult background. This experience inspired Gunn to integrate Krypto into the storyline. He expressed:

“Ozu, who came from a situation where he lived alongside 60 other dogs and had never known humans, was certainly a handful. Upon arriving, he wreaked havoc in our home, chewing on our furniture and even snacking on my laptop. It took quite some time before he would allow us to pet him.”

He further elaborated:

“I thought to myself, ‘How complicated would life be if Ozu possessed superpowers?’ Hence, Krypto was woven into the narrative, profoundly impacting the story as Ozu was reshaping my life. What better way to introduce the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than during #AdoptAShelterDog Month.”

Moviegoers can look forward to seeing Krypto the Superdog on the big screen when Superman premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Who exactly is Krypto the Superdog?

Krypto, in the comic book world, is known as Superman’s super-powered dog companion. His debut occurred in Adventure Comics #210 back in March 1955, a creation by Otto Binder and Curt Swan. On Krypton, Krypto was originally Jor-El’s pet, Superman’s biological father, and was also part of a test for the spacecraft that would ultimately transport Kal-El to Earth.

However, Krypto’s rocket got diverted during its journey, causing him to drift through space for quite some time. Eventually, he intercepted Kal-El’s signal on Earth, leading to his emergency landing on the Kent Farm, where he was reunited with Clark Kent. They quickly formed a close bond, embarking on numerous thrilling adventures together.

What can we anticipate from the forthcoming Superman film?

This upcoming Superman film marks the inaugural significant release under James Gunn’s new vision for DC. In addition to his role as the director, Gunn also penned the screenplay. David Corenswet will portray the iconic Man of Steel, stepping into the role last played by Henry Cavill.
