Jack Frost: The Marvel God Linked to a Beloved Avenger

Note: This article contains SPOILERS for Scarlet Witch #8 (2025).

The universe of Marvel continues to expand with the introduction of a significant character from a cherished legend. In the latest chapter of the Scarlet Witch saga, the titular hero and her newly appointed magical apprentice embark on a quest to lift an enduring curse afflicting a town locked in perpetual ice. Their journey leads them to uncover a godly force responsible for the eternal winter, ultimately revealing a connection to one of humanity’s oldest mythologies.

In Scarlet Witch #8, created by the talented trio of Steve Orlando, Lorenzo Tammetta, and Ruth Redmond, Wanda Maximoff guides her apprentice Amaranth through the mystical Last Door. This enchanted portal takes them to a town ensnared by primeval frost and terrorized by enormous, magical, worm-like creatures that thrive on the town’s despair.

Scarlet Witch uses a spell to unlock Jack Frost's lost memories.

At the heart of this cursed locale lies the source of the winter—an enigmatic sleeping figure. As Wanda awakens him, he identifies himself as “Jack Frost”, which prompts her to delve deeper into his psyche to reveal his true identity.

Jack Frost: Thor’s Great-Uncle

Jack Frost fights an ice giant using a massive icy-sword.

Determined to reverse the curse plaguing the town and the man entangled in the chaos, Wanda casts a powerful spell that fragments Jack’s memories. In that moment, he recalls his past as “Jack Frost” and remembers past escapades with heroes like Captain America, including a terrifying encounter with the voracious Ice Worms.

However, as Jack’s memories begin to mend, he uncovers a more profound truth—his original identity was Isabrot Burison, a notable figure in Asgardian lore, as the illegitimate son of King Buri, thus making him the great-uncle of Thor. Remarkably, Isabrot and Thor have crossed paths, both unaware of their familial connection.

In his former life, Isabrot, known as the Ice Breaker and “Patron of the Spring Thaw and Sentry of the Ten Realms, ” engaged in a relentless battle against the Ice Giant Ymir and his horde of Ice Worms. As the son of King Buri and a Frost Giant, he dedicated centuries to protect the realms until Ymir struck him down to Earth, where Isabrot eventually lost his memories and re-emerged as Jack Frost.

Thor’s lineage is already intricate, owing to the fact that his mother, Gaea, is one of the earliest Elder Gods of Earth. This connection links him to even more distant deities like Khonshu and Bast.

Given this tangled heritage, it comes as no surprise that another divine character has been integrated into Thor’s family narrative. The complexities of divine relationships are well-documented in Norse mythology, further extending Thor’s lineage. Through his mother Gaea, he shares a brotherly bond with the Greek Titan Cronus, enhancing Thor’s status as a prominent entity in both the Norse and Greek mythologies. With Jack Frost’s revelation, it is clear that this is not the last addition to Thor’s extensive divine family tree.

Scarlet Witch #8 is now available from Marvel Comics, offering fans a fascinating glimpse into the evolving mythology of the Marvel universe.
