Overview of the Upcoming Anaconda Reboot
- Jack Black and Paul Rudd will headline a comedy-infused reboot of Anaconda, aiming for a festive release on Christmas Day, 2025.
- The original Anaconda film, released in 1997, became a cult favorite despite its poor critical reception.
- This new installment marks a decade since the last film in the franchise.
In an exciting announcement, Jack Black and Paul Rudd are set to star in a revival of the cult classic horror film Anaconda. The much-anticipated release is scheduled for December 25, 2025, just in time for the holiday season.
Directed by Luis Llosa, the original Anaconda, which hit theaters in 1997, featured a star-studded cast including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, and Owen Wilson. The film chronicles a perilous journey into the Amazon rainforest as a film crew embarks on a quest to find the legendary green anaconda, ultimately triggering a horrific series of events as the snake goes on a rampage. Despite facing criticism upon its release, the film’s unique charm led to the creation of four sequels, which further explored the terrifying world of giant snakes: Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, Anaconda 3: Offspring, Anacondas: Trail of Blood, and the crossover Lake Placid vs Anaconda.
A New Era for Anaconda: Confirmed Release Date
This latest installment in the Anaconda series marks a significant shift in direction, as it will embrace a comedic approach rather than strictly horror. Directed by Tom Gormican, known for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the film promises a blend of humor and thrills. The release announcement was made via Sony’s social media platforms, revealing that audiences can expect a mixture of scares, laughs, and, as articulated by the stars, a “big f*cking snake!”

Both Black and Rudd have successfully navigated tentpole franchises, with Black poised to showcase his talents in an upcoming Minecraft movie, while Rudd continues to shine within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man. Additionally, Daniela Melchior, star of Road House and The Suicide Squad, will also join the ensemble cast, further enhancing the film’s appeal.
“You want to get scared? You want to laugh? You want to celebrate with your friends? Or maybe you’re alone and sad and have nobody, but just want to forget about that?”
Can This Anaconda Reboot Breathe New Life into the Franchise?
The forthcoming Anaconda film signifies the franchise’s first resurrection in a decade, following the release of Lake Placid vs Anaconda in 2015. Historically, the original film holds a modest 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was recognized with six Razzie nominations, with its sequel The Hunt for the Blood Orchid faring even worse at 26%. However, this reboot’s comedic direction, paired with the talents of two of Hollywood’s leading comedic actors, positions the film favorably to overcome the previous films’ negative legacies.
Mark your calendars! The new Anaconda film is set to premiere on December 25, 2025.
