Jac Schaefer Discusses Kathryn Hahn’s Controversial Scene in “Agatha All Along” with Pride

The star of Agatha All Along, Kathryn Hahn, took a daring approach in the premiere episode of this highly-anticipated miniseries, which launched on Disney+ on September 18, 2024. In the episode titled Seekest Thou the Road, Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) awakens in the Westview suburb, shedding all her previous personas from WandaVision. She steps outside completely n*ked in pursuit of answers.

Showrunner Jac Schaeffer characterized Agatha’s momentary n*dity as “firmly rooted in character,”emphasizing that the scene was “not exploitative”or “s*xual.”In a statement to TVLine before the show’s premiere, she elaborated:

“…In this moment, she (Agatha) needs answers, and she doesn’t care if she’s naked or not. So, yeah, it’s a point of pride for us.”

What Happens to Agatha in Agatha All Along?

This fantasy series, Agatha All Along, continues with Agatha still trapped in her Agnes persona from WandaVision. After being freed from the spell cast by Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) at the end of WandaVision by a mysterious goth named Teen (Joe Locke), she comes to consciousness and hurriedly exits her home n*ked, initiating a conversation with her neighbor, Herb/John Collins (David Payton).

During this encounter, her neighbor comically tries to drape a shirt over her, but she dismisses it and quickly returns inside to grab a robe and strategize her next steps.

According to showrunner Jac Schaeffer, the original script intended for Agatha to put on a robe before venturing outside. However, Kathryn Hahn felt her character would act impulsively and step outside n*ked without a second thought. Schaeffer agreed with this perspective and presented it to Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, who eventually supported the idea.

Kathryn, who briefly reveals her bare butt in the scene, chose not to use a body double. Strategic camera angles were employed to cover her nudity, and her long hair was positioned to shield her assets.

In an interview with Variety on September 19, 2024, Hahn confirmed that the scene was her inspiration, discussing her rationale for the bold choice:

“I thought it was good to see her as stripped down, literally, as we possibly could, which spoke into her powerlessness at the present moment. (Agatha has) been stripped of all of her power at this point in the series. I mean, she really had nothing at that point, and so it became about illustrating that gap between that moment and her finding her power again.”

This daring scene also signifies the first instance of a female actress revealing her n*ked butt in a Marvel Studios production since the MCU’s inception in 2008. Prior to this, only Chris Hemsworth bared his backside in the 2022 film, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Hahn reprises her role as Agatha Harkness from the miniseries WandaVision, which aired in 2021 and starred Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. The superhero series was also created by Jac Schaeffer.
