Enhancements in GTA 4: New PBR Textures with RTX Remix Mod
A few months post the official launch of the GTA 4 RTX Remix mod, mod developer xoxor4d has introduced an impressive add-on mod. This new enhancement adds around 18, 000 PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures to the game, predominantly comprised of roughness and normal maps, accompanied by a handful of height maps. These additions significantly elevate the visual experience for players.
Innovative Texture Processing Techniques
The enhancement is particularly notable as the textures were not designed manually. Instead, xoxor4d leveraged a custom version of the GTA 4 RTX Remix mod—dubbed AutoPBR—to dump textures in real-time during the rendering process. This compatibility mod utilized the RTX Remix API to gather extensive details on each texture, from which texture associations were meticulously created. Consequently, a USDA file was generated to include necessary overrides, with further modifications undertaken to adapt DX9 normal maps for Remix compatibility and convert specular maps into roughness maps using Python scripts.
Quality of the New Textures
Given the automated nature of this PBR conversion, the modder has cautioned players that some textures may appear inconsistent. However, the overall enhancement represents a marked improvement over the game’s original graphics.

The Rise of Physically Based Rendering
When Rockstar initially launched Grand Theft Auto 4 back in 2008, the concept of Physically Based Rendering was not yet established within the gaming realm. It wasn’t until 2013 that notable titles like Remember Me by Dontnod, Ryse: Son of Rome from Crytek, and Killzone: Shadow Fall by Guerrilla began employing this technology. The primary advantage of PBR is its ability to render materials in a way that responds more realistically to various lighting conditions, enhancing immersion.
This advancement is especially critical for the GTA 4 RTX Remix, which incorporates path tracing and fully utilizes the benefits of PBR textures. Nonetheless, it is important to note that this method does not replicate the artistry of textures that would have been hand-crafted by Rockstar’s designers.
Recent Developments in Modding
In related news, NVIDIA recently launched an update introducing a new Logic system. This feature allows modders to implement dynamic visual effects within their mods triggered by in-game events. It remains to be seen whether xoxor4d will incorporate this innovative capability into the ongoing upgrades for the GTA 4 RTX Remix mod.
