Ye, the artist officially known as Kanye West, took to social media today (Sept. 30) to share a picture with the caption “BULLY,”hinting at his upcoming solo album, which was announced during his Haikou listening event this past Saturday.
Fresh off the release of Vultures 2 and a sold-out concert in Haikou, China, Ye revealed that a second listening event will take place a week later, on September 28. The event was hosted at the same venue as his previous concert, the Haikou Wuyuan River Sports Park, attracting over 40,000 fans and attendees.
“I got a new album coming out. That album’s called ‘BULLY’ and this song is called ‘Beauty and The Beast’.”- Kanye West announced.
With clips from the listening event going viral, frequent collaborator and producer Mike Dean confirmed in an Instagram comment that “Beauty and The Beast”was one of the tracks that didn’t make it onto West’s Donda 2 LP.
Fans have flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to express their thoughts and excitement about the potential solo Kanye West album currently in development.
Critics have highlighted delays surrounding various albums and projects, with recent examples being the rocky rollouts of his and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaboration albums, Vultures 1 and Vultures 2, released earlier this year.
One fan expressed their anticipation for Kanye’s upcoming BULLY album, noting their eagerness for a solo project since the release of Vultures 1 back in February.
Similar sentiments followed, with fans sharing their excitement regarding Kanye West finally working on a solo album, with many referring to the anticipated project as a “masterpiece in the making”and a “comeback”for Ye’s career.
“we are overdue for a Ye solo project”- A fan tweeted.
“Another masterpiece in the making! Excited for what’s coming, Kanye. You always bring something different to the table.”- Suggested another fan.
“This is gonna be the biggest comeback of the century”- Asserted one more.
“The only solo album that we all waiting for”- Claimed a fan.
“Love that it’s solo. But ever since DONDA 1, I do not have any timeline expectations lol”- Remarked another fan.
Many took the opportunity to critique and mock the numerous projects Ye has delayed, shelved, or scrapped, including the well-known Yandhi album.
“Just how yandhi was coming soon”- Noted a critic.
“I can’t wait for this album to be scrapped as usual”- Said another.
“So first V1 got delayed then dropped (pretty nice album), then V2 gets delayed then finally drops (very anticlimactic, also a lil underwhelming), and now we’re getting a solo project…I’m the only one confused…? What happened to that 3rd installment”- Questioned a critic.
“By the title I can already tell he is gonna be on that “the white man did this to me” type s–t. I’m good bro”- Claimed another critic.
One individual also pointed out Kanye West’s close relationship with renowned record producer Rick Rubin, suggesting Ye should consider “hiring”the esteemed producer to enhance his upcoming solo album.
“With his current quality control we can expect an album every month. Bro needs to hire Rick Rubin to cut out like 99% of whatever he did and improve the remaining 1%”- Stated a user.
Highlights from Kanye West’s second Haikou concert
On Saturday evening, Kanye West delivered a live performance to an audience of 40,000 fans, marking his second live event in China’s Hainan province this month.
The concert proved to be a significant success, featuring Ye performing numerous hits, along with previews of new, unreleased music. The listening event showcased a large “Vulture”installation, a wolf mascot, atmospheric lighting designs, and the reveal of his upcoming solo album, BULLY.
As confirmed by Mike Dean, Kanye West also premiered Donda 2’s vaulted single, Beauty and The Beast, for the first time, confirming its inclusion in his upcoming LP.
“Ye’s second performance was truly awe-inspiring. He maintained his punctuality, constructing a bridge transcending borders with music. In his voice, I could almost feel the essence of music without boundaries and experience that genuine emotion crossing nations,”- a Haikou resident told China Daily.
Much like his first Haikou concert, a significant portion of ticket sales were made by individuals from outside the Hainan province and international fans, contributing to an uptick in tourism for Haikou and China.
Ty Dolla $ign and Ye’s eldest daughter, North West, joined West on stage to perform their hit collaborations from the Vultures album, including tracks like Talking, Jail, and the leaked single, Preacher Man.
During the concert, Kanye also appeared to preview an updated version of the song 530, included in Vultures 2. Variety magazine noted that several fans referred to the preview as a “finished version with a second verse.”
Kanye West’s Haikou concerts mark the rapper’s first return to performing in China in over 16 years, following his shows in Beijing and Shanghai in 2008.
