Renowned musician and activist Meek Mill has addressed the global reactions following the recent arrest of the Chicago-based rapper Lil Durk.

On October 28, 2024, Meek Mill took to his X account to share a video featuring fans of Durk rallying in the streets, advocating for their idol’s freedom. The acclaimed rapper emphasized on X that this issue transcends mere street concerns —

“It’s really bigger than the streets!”Meek Mill tweeted.

This comes after Lil Durk’s arrest on October 24, 2024, where he was taken into custody in Florida amid allegations related to a murder-for-hire plot involving rapper Quando Rondo, dating back to 2022, as reported by NPR.

Meek Mill comments on Ghanaian demonstrations supporting Lil Durk

On Monday, Meek Mill also reacted to a viral clip showing residents in Ghana taking to the streets in solidarity with Lil Durk after his arrest. The footage displayed young children parading with a flag representing Only the Family, the fan collective of Lil Durk, as they donned OTF and Durk-branded attire while chanting for his release.

Following Lil Durk’s apprehension, details emerged about the gravity of his situation. He faces federal accusations for allegedly funding a botched revenge killing against rapper Quando Rondo at a Los Angeles gas station in 2022, which resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin. Durk, whose given name is Durk Devontay Banks, was arrested at Miami International Airport attempting to exit the country.

NPR additionally notes that five other members of the Only the Family collective—Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, and Asa Houston—were also taken into custody in connection with the case.

As reported by Variety, Durk and five associates are implicated in a retaliatory murder plot against Quando Rondo, allegedly stemming from the 2020 shooting of Big Von, a friend of Durk’s who was killed by Rondo’s associate, Lul Timm. Big Von was signed to Durk’s label at the time of his death.

In statements to NPR, Los Angeles’ United States attorney, Martin Estrada, described the shooting incident as “a cold-blooded murder” —

“Mr. Banks is charged with orchestrating a cold-blooded murder that resulted in the death of a rival’s family member. The shooting occurred in an open area, at a gas station situated at a busy intersection, endangering numerous bystanders,”Estrada stated.

Furthermore, an official notice from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California released on October 25, 2024, warned that if Lil Durk and his associates are convicted of the federal charges, they may face life imprisonment.

Additionally, according to NPR, FBI Agent Sarah Corcoran reported in her affidavit that OTF members allegedly commit violent acts, including murder and assault, under Banks’ command to maintain their status within the group.

Corcoran’s affidavit further links the current allegations to the November 2020 murder of OTF rapper King Von, who was shot at an Atlanta nightclub at the age of 26. This tragedy unfolded during a confrontation between Von and Rondo, where a firearm was discharged by one of Rondo’s associates, resulting in Von’s death.

Corcoran also indicated that on August 18, 2022, associates of Durk identified Rondo’s location at a hotel in Los Angeles. Deandre Wilson, Keith Jones, David Lindsey, Asa Houston, and another unidentified individual traveled from Chicago to San Diego that day, later driving to Los Angeles using funds provided by Durk.

Moreover, reports suggest that Durk communicated with an associate about arranging a flight, advising, “Don’t book any flights under names connected to me.” It is also noted that Durk stayed in a residence located in the San Fernando Valley that day.

Lil Durk, who secured the Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his track “All My Life”in 2024, is currently being detained at Broward County Jail.
