“It was a great day” – Tye Ruotolo reflects on ‘truly remarkable’ moment he became a ONE world champion
As a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert, Tye Ruotolo finds all the motivation he needs for his upcoming fight under the ONE Championship spotlight.
The current welterweight submission grappling world champion will be defending his title against Izaak Michell in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 21, which will be broadcast live from the historic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. The event will take place on Friday, April 5, during U.S. primetime.
In November last year at ONE Fight Night 16, the 21-year-old was given the opportunity to compete for the division’s first title against the formidable Russian fighter, Magomed Abdulkadirov.
Despite being unable to secure a submission in his historic victory in Bangkok, the California native still impressed with his execution of a D’Arce choke, a guillotine attempt, and an armbar in the final moments. This accomplishment now puts him alongside his twin brother, Kade, as two of the four submission grappling world champions on the international stage.
During a recent appearance on The Shintaro Higashi Show, he reminisced about the memorable night he spent at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.
Tye Ruotolo suggested:
“It was a great day, you know, to finally get the belt wrapped around my waist. My brother had the belt for a little while now. So to be able to, you know, be the champ with him was truly remarkable.”
