If all goes according to Muschietti’s vision, viewers can look forward to more than just a single season of chilling narratives.

The IT films featured Bill Skarsgard embodying the iconic character, Pennywise, who terrorizes a group of children in 1988 and their adult selves in 2016. As established in King’s lore, Pennywise resurfaces every 27 years, and IT: Welcome to Derry will depict another of these grisly chapters, focusing on the year 1962, which precedes the events of the initial film. The cast includes talents such as Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, and James Remar, with Skarsgard not only reprising his role as Pennywise but also serving as an executive producer.

In a recent interview with Radio TU, he disclosed plans for a total of three distinct seasons, each set in a different historical era. “The first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908,”he stated, indicating a deliberate choice in the narrative’s reverse chronological storytelling.

Each season of IT: Welcome to Derry is designed to revolve around a devastating event coinciding with Pennywise’s reoccurrence. Muschietti highlighted particular historical incidents that will shape the narrative arc, including the infamous fire at the Black Spot, which had a personal impact on Mike Hanlon’s father, the brutal Bradley Gang massacre, and the catastrophic explosion at Kitchener Ironworks. This structure suggests that the series may adopt an anthology format, introducing new characters while maintaining a connection through Pennywise’s terrifying presence.

Although HBO has not officially confirmed the production of subsequent seasons, a positive reception could pave the way for expanded storytelling. Skarsgard has reassured fans that IT: Welcome to Derry will retain its intense edge, promising a hardcore experience. While the official premiere date remains unannounced, the series is anticipated to join HBO’s schedule following the conclusion of other original shows, including The White Lotus and The Last of Us.
