Enhancements in Windows 365: Introducing Cloud Apps Private Preview

Windows 365 Cloud PC has revolutionized the way users access virtualized operating systems by enabling seamless interaction without the need for physical hardware. This innovation supports hybrid and remote work environments through cloud-managed resources. Recently, Microsoft has indicated advancements in this experience by announcing a private preview for Windows 365 Cloud Apps.

What’s New with Windows 365 Cloud Apps?

In a recent official announcement, Microsoft stated it is piloting a method to securely deliver individual applications to users via Windows 365, reducing the need for full Cloud PC setups. Users will still access these apps hosted on the Cloud PC, but will not require a dedicated virtual machine for each one.

Facilitating Access for Seasonal and Remote Workers

This enhanced application delivery model is designed to better serve seasonal and remote employees, granting them quick access to essential line-of-business (LOB) applications. Notably, it simplifies management for IT administrators by centralizing controls. Furthermore, Microsoft anticipates that this advancement will aid organizations transitioning from traditional on-premises virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) to cloud solutions.

Streamlined Implementation for IT Administrators

For IT professionals accustomed to configuring Windows 365, deploying this new experience is straightforward. Administrators must select an “app-only”configuration rather than the full desktop mode during setup, allowing them to regulate licenses and access to applications efficiently.

Currently, during this private preview phase, only apps available in the Start menu from the gallery or custom images can be utilized. However, Microsoft plans to expand the types of applications eligible for streaming as they approach general availability (GA).

User Experience and Security Measures

End-users with Cloud Apps will launch their applications through the Windows App gateway. Any security policies linked to their Cloud PCs will also extend to the Cloud Apps in use, ensuring a cohesive and secure operational environment.

Joining the Private Preview

Microsoft invites organizations interested in participating in the private preview to either reach out to their Microsoft account team or to complete this form. Currently, there is no information regarding the timeline for general availability.
