Is Zendaya Cast as a Trans Character in ‘Shrek 5’?

The recent teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Shrek 5 has captured significant attention, igniting discussions across the internet. Reactions have varied widely, with viewers expressing both excitement and skepticism.

While some fans have voiced their dissatisfaction with the character designs and the humor presented in the trailer, many others are delighted to see the beloved ogre back in action after a lengthy absence. This installment notably introduces Shrek’s teenage daughter, voiced by Zendaya, further expanding the Shrek universe. The last time audiences met Shrek and Fiona’s offspring— the adorable green triplets Felicia, Fergus, and Farkle—was in 2007’s Shrek the Third, and now these characters are all grown up.

Since the teaser’s release, fans have been closely examining the Shrek offspring, leading to some interesting observations.

Is Shrek’s Daughter Transgender?

In the Shrek films, Felicia has been characterized as the only girl among the triplets, distinctively having blue eyes. However, the teenage ogre in the latest teaser sports brown eyes, raising questions about whether this is indeed Felicia or if one of the brown-eyed male siblings, Fergus or Farkle, has transitioned.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), this theory has gained some traction. User Sarky amusingly remarked, “Not to be a Shrek nerd, but I’m sure Felicia is the only girl out of the ogre triplets and she has blue eyes. That means either Fergus or Farkle transitioned, let’s go?”

Though Sarky claimed their comment was light-hearted, it sparked lively conversation among fans. Another user pointed out, “Anyone who says she’s not trans clearly don’t remember when their main cast changed entire species in Shrek 2; I think a gender equivalent of that potion exists.” There is already humorously implied representation in the Shrek franchise through Doris, the bartender at the Poisoned Apple, leading some to hope for further inclusivity in the upcoming film.

Despite the playful nature of these theories, there’s a consensus that the eye color discrepancies are not definitive indications of identity change, given that infant eye color can evolve over time. With Shrek’s magic-imbued universe, one could whimsically speculate that a magical potion might explain the difference. Alternatively, it could simply be an oversight by the animators.

Even so, this theory has provided a fun talking point for Shrek enthusiasts. In a climate where LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under scrutiny, particularly in the U. S., the representation of transgender characters in mainstream media is more vital than ever.
