Vienna Blood has wrapped up its fourth season with an exhilarating narrative that stood apart from its predecessors. Unlike earlier installments, the latest season concentrated on a single extensive storyline, unraveling a deep-seated conspiracy that had the potential to destabilize the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt, played by Juergen Maurer, teamed up with Max Liebermann, portrayed by Matthew Beard, to navigate through the intrigue, albeit with Max mostly sidelined due to incapacitation. Their efforts ultimately saved Vienna from imminent danger. However, with the season’s dramatic conclusion, many fans are left wondering: what does the future hold for this beloved series?
The Future of ‘Vienna Blood’: Is Season 5 on the Horizon?

As of now, the future of Vienna Blood remains uncertain. Although the series has not been officially canceled, speculation arises from the fact that Season 4 is adapted from the final Liebermann Papers novel by Frank Tallis, titled The Mephisto Waltz. This has led some to believe that there may be no further material left for the writers to explore, indicating a potential conclusion to the show.
However, the season finale left sufficient narrative threads for the possibility of continued storytelling. The mastermind behind the season’s overarching conspiracy is still at large, posing a significant threat to the stability of the empire. The only officer privy to this crucial information is Oskar, who must navigate the ensuing complexities. Can peace truly return as long as this menace roams free? Oskar’s journey appears only to be beginning, and he may find himself relying on Max more than ever in future endeavors.
Frank Tallis has previously expressed a desire to step back from the adaptation process. In an interview with Watch to Watch, he stated:
“Right from the beginning I made the decision I was going to take a backseat in the BBC’s adaptation. For me, the test of whether an idea is good or not is if you can hand it over and other people can run with it, but the core remains the same. TV is a very different medium to a novel and a production like this is a group accomplishment. Having a novelist too heavily involved could constrain the talent and be an obstacle to the group’s creativity. When you exhaust the books, if you’ve let the idea develop and gain its own momentum, in a way it doesn’t need the novels or the author anymore … but doesn’t in any way stop me from writing proposals or plot ideas!”
According to Tallis, there’s no reason why Vienna Blood cannot continue, even in the absence of a direct narrative arc to follow. The writers possess an intricate understanding of the characters, and if Tallis is open to providing insight, a more definitive conclusion to this gripping historical drama could be within reach. After all, viewers are eager to witness the ultimate downfall of the enigmatic Mephisto.
For those who wish to catch up or revisit the series, all episodes of Vienna Blood are currently available for streaming on BBC iPlayer in the U. K.and PBS in the U. S.
