After a long wait, Disney has officially confirmed the comeback of the beloved Princess Diaries franchise with the upcoming Princess Diaries 3. The highly anticipated film will be directed by Adele Lim, who joins Disney for this exciting new installment.

Adele Lim made a notable directorial debut in 2023 with the bold and hilarious R-rated comedy Joy Ride. Previously, she also contributed as a screenwriter for Disney’s Raya and The Last Dragon (2021), which received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The production of Princess Diaries 3 is overseen by Debra Martin Chase, the producer who initially launched the film franchise. Other key contributors include Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack serving as executive producers, and Flora Greenson penning the screenplay.

The original Princess Diaries was released in 2001, marking the film debut of Anne Hathaway. The franchise grew with the release of The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement in 2004, and now, after nearly 20 years, fans will finally see the third film take shape. However, the official release date is yet to be announced.

In a recent interview, Adele Lim expressed her enthusiasm about directing the third installment of this iconic series. As reported by Variety, she shared:

“As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core values of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Adele Lim, a talented Malaysian screenwriter, producer, and director, is well-known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians, which emerged as one of the most successful romantic comedies of 2018, winning the Critics’ Choice Award and receiving a Best Picture nomination at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild Awards. Her diverse portfolio also includes TV series such as One Tree Hill and Lethal Weapon.

On October 4, 2024, Anne Hathaway subtly unveiled the announcement of Princess Diaries 3 through a video featuring clips from the first two films. Reportedly, the project has been under development since 2022. Hathaway previously hinted at the film’s progress in an interview with V Magazine, stating:

“There is nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

The story centers on the character Mia Thermopolis, an introverted high school student who discovers she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. As Mia navigates her new royal responsibilities, the sequel follows her as a college graduate preparing for a wedding with her childhood friend Michael. However, her grandmother, the Queen, has other plans, insisting that Mia marry a prince to secure Genovia’s future.

In Princess Diaries 3, fans can expect the story to progress from where the original 2001 film and its 2004 sequel left off, rather than rebooting the series. While plot details and full cast listings are not confirmed, it is anticipated that Anne Hathaway will reprise her role.
