Is Nicki Minaj Self-Managed? Rapper Discusses Her Plans for a Personal Management Company and Record Label
Recognized as the “queen of rap,”Nicki Minaj expertly balances her music career alongside brand partnerships and collaborative projects, necessitating a dedicated manager to oversee her professional and personal endeavors. Though she self-managed for a short period after her relationship with SALXCO, as of January 2024, WME Management has taken the reins of her management.
WME, part of the prestigious William Morris Agency that merged with Endeavor Talent Agency back in 2009, handles a roster of prominent music stars, including Adele, Eric Church, Olivia Rodrigo, and Jordan Davis, among others.
In reporting by Billboard, prior to her contract with SALXCO, Nicki was under the guidance of Irving Azoff at Full Stop Management from 2019 to 2021. Before Azoff’s tenure, the rapper, famous for her hit “Side to Side,”was represented by Gee Roberson and Cortez Bryant.
Nicki Minaj Discussed Her Management Company in Interview with Joe Budden
On March 9, 2024, Nicki Minaj engaged in a conversation with Joe Budden, during which the topic of her management arose.
“I am creating my own management company,”Minaj disclosed.
She elaborated that this initiative was initially under the direction of her management team, but as it evolved, she felt the desire to include others in the venture. Nicki elaborated:
“I’m also launching my record label… I have a few artists I plan to start the record label with.”
In a subsequent episode of Queen Radio, Minaj discussed further details about her record label:
“I now have a record label… When I support an artist, you know how much I invest in those who aren’t even signed under me. Just imagine the effort I’ll put into those who are!”
During the broadcast, Nicki revealed that Wendy Goldstein, co-president of Republic Records, inspired her to announce the establishment of her record label.
“Don’t be under the impression that my label will focus solely on rap, or be limited to any specific demographic. We’re embracing various genres of music.”
Minaj Credits Lil Wayne as an Influence in Her Label’s Creation
Towards the conclusion of her March episode of Queen Radio, Nicki Minaj reflected on the significant impact Lil Wayne had during the formative years of her rap journey, stating:
“When I entered this industry, I didn’t have any formal agreements with Lil Wayne. Yet, he brought us on tour, had us in recording studios, and featured on my mixtapes.”
The rapper of “Super Bass”remarked:
“That’s why I recognize the value of having someone handle the demanding aspects for you. It explains why many artists debut only to vanish quickly – they lack a solid support system. There’s no real advocate believing in them, someone who’s committed to ensuring their success.”
With the guidance of Wayne over the years, Nicki aims to offer the same support to emerging artists who join her record label. Though she didn’t disclose her label’s name at that time, Billboard reported that artists such as Nana Fofie, Tate Kobang, London Hill, and Rico Danna are expected to be part of her roster.
Recently, following the completion of her fourth solo headlining tour, the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, on October 11, Minaj announced her intention to take a break from her career to spend cherished time with her family.
