Is It Possible to Rename Cities in Civ 7?

Is It Possible to Rename Cities in Civ 7?

In Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, players are typically immersed in the rich tapestry of real-world cultures and cities, a hallmark of this longstanding franchise. However, the gameplay experience allows for a unique twist: players can rename cities. This not only enhances the creative aspect of city management but also serves practical purposes, especially during conquest phases, whether to symbolize assimilation or to playfully annoy friends in multiplayer settings.

While previous iterations, such as Civ 4, provided immediate options for naming cities upon their founding, Civilization 7 adopts a different approach. This shift may leave new players unsure of how to exercise this feature, given that renaming options are not immediately visible. The absence of a straightforward method to rename settlements can lead to confusion about whether the feature is entirely absent or merely obscured.

A Notable Absence in Gameplay

As it stands, Civ 7 does not offer the option to rename cities following its initial release. This is particularly frustrating for players, considering that such a feature appears relatively simple to implement. Although there have been other omissions in this release, the lack of city renaming stands out as a significant drawback. However, there is hope for future enhancements.

Potential for Future Updates: City Renaming

Historically, the introduction of city renaming options in the Civilization series has evolved over time. Notably, Civ 6 also lacked this feature at its launch but later incorporated it through a subsequent update. This historical precedent suggests that Civ 7 may similarly embrace city renaming in future patches.

It seems plausible that the development team prioritized fixing core gameplay mechanics over integrating this particular feature. Despite the disappointment of seeing this established element missing at launch, players remain hopeful for future updates, especially as deluxe editions and DLC plans are rolled out. When the renaming option is eventually added, it would be intuitive for it to appear in the settlement interface, allowing players to modify city names dynamically as their civilizations progress through the ages.

Until that anticipated update arrives, however, Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 compels players to accept the original names of their cities, regardless of how many changes they may undergo during gameplay.
