Is Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO Available on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch?

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, which is set to advance the beloved Budokai Tenkaichi fighting game series, excitement continues to build. Publisher Bandai Namco has announced that the game will launch for players later this month. However, the question remains: will last-gen gamers be able to join in on the action?

Despite a trend in decreasing support for multiplatform releases, the substantial install bases of PS4 and Xbox One consoles mean some titles still make their way to these platforms. This also applies to the popular hybrid console, Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will only be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Created by Spike Chunsoft, famed for their work on Danganronpa, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is designed to fully leverage the latest gaming hardware for some of the most spectacular and dynamic battles seen in the series.

This ambition is showcased in the impressive gameplay presentations by the publisher, demonstrating significant upgrades to the Budokai Tenkaichi experience. For instance, the fighting arenas are larger than ever before and can even feature instant weather changes when players charge their Ki, showcasing the true power of the superhuman characters.

The game promises massive, destructible environments and a plethora of effects onscreen at lightning speeds, all optimized for current-gen consoles and mid-to-high-end gaming PCs. Consequently, the technical aspirations of the studio would not be achievable on the older PS4 or Xbox One, and certainly not on the less powerful Nintendo Switch.

This news is disappointing for PS4 and Xbox One enthusiasts who have been anticipating the next installment since the release of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on PS2 and Nintendo Wii back in 2007, which remains the last entry to debut on a Nintendo platform. Nintendo Switch fans can only hope that Bandai Namco considers a port for the anticipated next-gen Nintendo Switch 2.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will be officially released on October 11, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
