Is Deceitful Love Inspired by a True Story? An In-Depth Explanation

Deceitful Love is a captivating Italian remake of the 2019 British miniseries Gold Digger, which premiered on Netflix on October 9, 2024. The show features the talents of Monica Guerritore and Giacomo Gianniotti, both directed by Pappi Corsicato, who is recognized for his previous work on The Temptation.

This series, like its British counterpart, is purely fictional and not inspired by actual events. During an interview with BBC in November 2019, Marnie Dickens, the creator of Gold Digger, clarified that there was no real-life backdrop for the story, explaining her creative process:

“A couple of years later, I came up with the concept of Gold Digger. Although I always intended to write a family drama, the idea of a matriarch falling in love with a significantly younger man was a fresh twist that transformed my vague idea into a concrete narrative. I quickly drafted the pitch and shared it with my preferred producers.”

This confirms that both Gold Digger and its Italian version, Deceitful Love, are works of fiction.

Plot Overview of Deceitful Love

Following the storyline of BBC’s Gold Digger, Deceitful Love portrays the life of Gabriella, played by Monica Guerritore. Recently turning 60, Gabriella is a successful hotelier dealing with a complicated relationship with her children. While celebrating her milestone birthday on the enchanting Amalfi Coast, she meets a younger man in his thirties, igniting an unexpected romantic interest.

This young man, Elia, portrayed by Giacomo Gianniotti, mirrors her feelings, leading to a budding relationship. Nonetheless, Gabriella’s family, which includes her ex-husband and children, quickly questions Elia’s intentions.

With little known about his background, doubts arise regarding whether Elia genuinely loves Gabriella or is more attracted to her significant wealth. In essence, Elia may represent a potential gold digger.

As the family delves deeper into investigating Elia’s motives, tensions rise, and Gabriella is left to confront the implications of her family’s suspicions about her new partner.

Reflecting on her narrative goals for Gold Digger, Marnie emphasized the importance of exploring different perspectives:

“One of my key interests in crafting a family drama was to highlight how everyone has distinct narratives shaped by their experiences, often distancing us from one another.”

“With this in mind, I planned the series to showcase discrepancies in viewpoints. Each episode features one half focused on the lead character, Julia, while the other half views the events from those around her, whether it’s her eldest son in the first episode or her daughter in the second.”
