As reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is actively working on innovative satellite connectivity features intended to enhance iPhone users’ connectivity options far beyond standard mobile carriers.

Apple’s discussions over the potential launch of its own satellite service have sparked considerable debate among executives. Some are advocating for the move, while others caution that Apple should preserve its identity and not operate as a telecommunications carrier.

Anticipated Features in Future iPhones

The next generation of iPhones, projected for release in 2026, is expected to include several groundbreaking satellite connectivity features:

Satellite over 5G: iPhones are set to integrate 5G NTN technology, which utilizes satellite infrastructure to enhance cellular coverage.
Photo Messaging via Satellite: The Messages app may soon allow users to send images through satellite connections, an exciting upgrade from the current text-only capability.
Third-Party App Integration: An upcoming API may grant developers within the Apple ecosystem access to integrate satellite features into their applications, though compatibility may vary.
Natural Connection Mode: Users will no longer have to align their devices skyward to establish satellite connections, allowing for more convenient and reliable connectivity.
Satellite-Enhanced Apple Maps: Users could navigate using Apple Maps without relying on cellular or Wi-Fi networks, significantly improving functionality in remote areas.

Infrastructure and Future Developments

Currently, Apple utilizes Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure to support existing services. However, the proposed features necessitate significant upgrades to Globalstar’s satellite network. Interestingly, Globalstar is reportedly negotiating with SpaceX concerning a potential acquisition, which may expedite the development of these capabilities for Apple.

Cost Structure for Users

Apple intends to offer many of these satellite services at no additional cost. Users may have the option to subscribe to advanced features through their existing carriers, SpaceX, or other satellite service providers.

No Plans for Voice or Video Calls via Satellite

While SpaceX is forging partnerships with mobile carriers to facilitate voice and video calls through satellite networks, Apple currently has no plans to introduce similar functionalities, according to Gurman.
