Rumors are swirling around Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 series, hinting at some major modifications. There is speculation that Apple could eliminate the “Plus”variant in favor of what might be called the iPhone 17 “Air”or iPhone 17 “Slim.”Industry insights suggest that the iPhone 17 Slim could emerge as an appealing device with non-Pro features, showcasing one of the most significant redesigns since the debut of the iPhone X. Additionally, reports indicate that the “Slim”model may include a 24MP front-facing camera, 12GB of RAM, and is likely to utilize a 3nm processor.

In a recent development, new leaks have surfaced regarding the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max. Analyst Jeff Pu reports that this premium model will sport a more compact and narrower Dynamic Island. According to a research brief from Haitong International, which was shared earlier this month and acquired by MacRumors, Pu has hinted that there might also be alterations to Face ID in the forthcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Significantly, Apple may integrate “metalens”technology for Face ID, which would facilitate the inclusion of a smaller Dynamic Island in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Pu emphasized that this enhancement could specifically pertain to the Pro Max model and may not be seen in the smaller iPhone 17 Pro or other variants. What exactly is this “metalens,”and why isn’t it being applied to all iPhone 17 models?

Reports indicate that conventional iPhone camera systems employ curved lenses, designed to redirect light toward the sensor. However, “metalens”technology employs a thin, flat lens embedded with microscopic structures. These patterns enable it to focus light more precisely at a single point compared to traditional curved lenses found in iPhones. Unfortunately, Pu did not elaborate on how Apple intends to leverage this technology to reconfigure the Dynamic Island in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, nor how “metalens”will play a role in Face ID functionality.
