
Nearly two years ago, Apple unveiled a new titanium finish for its iPhone 15 Pro models, which was touted to offer enhanced durability compared to the stainless steel and aluminum components found in earlier versions. The matte look of the titanium finish gave the devices a sleek appearance, but recent leaks suggest that Apple might revert to aluminum frames for the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup. Interestingly, one model, identified as the iPhone 17 Air, is expected to retain the titanium finish, potentially addressing concerns related to an ultra-thin design.
Potential Durability with Titanium in Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Yet
Initial reports from The Information indicated that the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models would abandon the titanium frame, which would signify a shift away from the durability the brand has emphasized. However, notable analyst Jeff Pu has suggested that the iPhone 17 Air will indeed feature a titanium frame, marking a difference between this model and the rest of the lineup. Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, corroborated this by stating that the iPhone 17 Air will utilize a “titanium-aluminum alloy metal frame, ”albeit with a lower titanium content compared to the current Pro and Pro Max models.
This means that the iPhone 17 Air stands to be the only model equipped with a titanium frame, albeit in a reduced capacity compared to the iPhone 16 Pro models. The effectiveness of this new alloy blend in enhancing durability remains to be seen, especially since the Air model is anticipated to be thinner than its predecessors.
