The anticipated iPhone 17 Air is set to replace the existing ‘Plus’ model in Apple’s smartphone lineup. This new addition will not simply mirror the specifications of the base model; rather, it is poised to occupy a middle ground between the standard iPhone 17 and the higher-end iPhone 17 Pro models. Recent reports indicate that this ultra-sleek device will boast 12GB of RAM, matching that of the Pro versions. However, a recent leak suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will operate on the A19 Pro chip, albeit with a reduced number of GPU cores.

The iPhone 17 Air: Bridging the Gap Between Base and Pro Models

According to insights shared by the well-known Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone 17 Air will incorporate Apple’s A19 Pro chip. Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which feature a 6-core GPU, the Air variant will reportedly come with a 5-core GPU. This implies that while the graphical capabilities may not fully match those of its Pro counterparts, the A19 Pro chip itself remains powerful enough for most users. In practical terms, average users are unlikely to discern significant differences in performance, suggesting that any downgrade may be relatively minor. Nonetheless, the chip’s efficiency is expected to be consistent, which will be critical for optimizing battery life in the Air model.

Adding a layer of intrigue, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posits that the iPhone 17 Air may instead utilize the standard A19 chip, aligning it with the base model. Given these contrasting reports, the final positioning of the iPhone 17 Air remains uncertain. One point of agreement is that the device will feature RAM on par with the Pro models, which indicates a potential for performance that could align more closely with higher-end devices.

Kuo further suggested that the base model of the iPhone 17 will be powered by the A18 chip from the previous generation. Consequently, if the iPhone 17 Air indeed features the A19 chip, it could serve as a key differentiator within the lineup. While Kuo hasn’t confirmed that the Air will utilize the Pro version of the chip, the Apple announcement slated for September is rapidly approaching, at which point these questions will be resolved definitively.
