The Rise of Tech Gifts: Spotlight on Apple’s Offerings This Holiday Season

Apple products remain popular choices for holiday gifting.

As technology continues to evolve, tech gifts have gained immense popularity, particularly during the holiday season. Among the leading brands, Apple stands out with an impressive range of products that many individuals consider for gifting their loved ones.

Insights into Apple’s Most Gifted Products

While Apple’s product lineup includes the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch, a recent analysis from the analytics firm CIRP reveals interesting gifting trends. Notably, the iPad and Apple Watch have emerged as the top contenders for the most gifted devices from Apple.

Seasonal Surge in Gifting

CIRP’s report indicates a significant uptick in the gifting of iPads and Apple Watches during the last quarter of the year, particularly between October and December. In Q4 2023, around 6% of iPad users and 9% of Apple Watch users reported receiving their device as a gift.

This represents a marked increase compared to other times of the year, where gifting statistics for Apple devices typically hover below 3% in any given quarter. In contrast, gifting rates for iPhones and Macs are notably low.

Why iPads and Apple Watches Make Great Gifts

According to CIRP, the popularity of iPads and Apple Watches as gifts can be attributed to their status as “easy gifts.” These devices are seen as “nice to have”rather than “must-have”items, making them appealing options for holiday presents.

Moreover, iPads and Apple Watches often require a single initial investment with minimal additional costs—except for options like cellular plans or the Apple Pencil. However, it is important to note that an iPhone is typically necessary for full functionality of the Apple Watch.

The Case Against Gifting iPhones and Macs

On the other hand, gifting an iPhone can be complex and costly. The initial purchase is merely the starting point, as the recipient will also shoulder ongoing monthly carrier fees. A humorous analogy by CIRP highlights this, stating:

“Giving an iPhone as a gift is kind of like giving someone a puppy.”

Similarly, Macs represent a premium investment and are often tailored to specific user needs, making them less ideal as gifts. Additionally, the report did not cover gift-giving statistics for AirPods, which, while less expensive and not reliant on other Apple devices, could also be considered a solid gifting option.
