Apple’s highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is set to commence on Monday, and a recent report has provided exciting insights into what users can expect. The centerpiece of this year’s event will be iOS 26, the forthcoming operating system for iPhones. This release is expected to unveil features related to the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup. Significantly, iOS 26 is being touted as the most substantial update since iOS 7, which was introduced back in 2013.
Insights into iOS 26: A Leap Towards Digital Glass Technology
According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, iOS 26 will draw inspiration from Apple’s visionOS, introducing a design that incorporates transparent, glass-like effects throughout its user interface. Gurman emphasizes that the primary interface will revolve around “digital glass, ” integrating elements of light and transparency.
Tool and tab bars will undergo aesthetic transformations, featuring redesigned app icons, buttons, and an increased reliance on pop-out menus. This means users will be able to click on a button to access a quick list of additional options.
Previously, Jon Prosser reported on potential alterations to app icons, suggesting a slightly more circular shape. Contrary to those expectations, Gurman notes that the icons will largely retain their current design in iOS 26. However, in light of the new interface, both Home Screen and iPad widgets are set for a redesign, ensuring they maintain their existing functionality.
Apple is also revamping its stock applications. Safari will experience a major overhaul, boasting a “significantly updated look” with a more transparent address bar. Meanwhile, the Phone app will feature a new design that integrates favorite contacts, recent calls, and voicemails into a unified, scrollable view. Gurman clarifies that users will have the option to revert this change through Settings if they prefer the previous format.
In an exciting addition, the Preview app is finally making its way to the iPhone and iPad this year, a tool that has long been available on Mac devices. This development is expected to enhance productivity for users, offering improved PDF management and annotation capabilities. Additionally, iPadOS 26 will introduce significant multitasking improvements, enhancing iPad’s functionality—something that has been previously speculated upon.
