iOS 18.2 now allows EU users to delete Apple App Store and various native apps

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) has compelled major “gatekeeper”companies to revise their policies, enabling users to utilize their devices as they see fit. In this regard, the European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has taken a firm stance against Apple, pushing for adherence to the DMA regulations. Consequently, Apple has revealed revisions to its policies, specifically targeting users in the EU, which is reflected in the recent iOS 18.2 update.

With the iOS 18.2 update, Apple empowers EU customers to remove pre-installed applications such as the Calculator, Calendar, Music, and Notes. Furthermore, users can now also uninstall the App Store itself. This enhancement grants iPhone and iPad users greater control over their devices, allowing them to tailor their functionality. It’s important to note that the iOS 18.2 version is currently in beta and began its rollout to developers on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that following the installation of the iOS 18.2 beta update in the EU, users are now able to delete not just the App Store, but also the Camera, Safari, Messages, and Photos applications. This adjustment is aimed at fulfilling the DMA’s stipulations, which require technology companies to permit users to uninstall any applications they desire. In Europe, Apple users will also have the ability to download alternative app stores to supplant the native App Store according to their preferences. A new feature has been integrated into the Settings app, enabling users to restore the App Store after it has been deleted.

Moreover, the iOS 18.2 update brings additional modifications for iPhone users globally. Apple has incorporated a new menu into the Settings app that simplifies the process of changing the default applications on iPhone and iPad devices. Users now have the capability to set their preferred default apps for messaging, email, calls, web browsing, password management, and keyboard input. Additionally, iOS 18.2 is introducing a host of new features that have been teased for several months.
