Fast forward to GDC 2025, and while their presence was notably less pronounced and lacked the high-profile partnerships of the previous year, this does not imply a lack of innovation. During the recent event in San Francisco, we had the opportunity to sit down with Inworld AI’s CEO, Kylan Gibbs, to gain insights into the company’s recent developments and future directions.
Company Evolution and Technical Shifts
Inworld AI has been in operation for nearly four years, initially launching with a character engine that functioned as a server-side application, connecting to game engines through an SDK. This setup aimed to simplify AI complexity for designers and narrative writers. However, feedback revealed a desire for greater control, leading to a transition towards local execution of logic and tools.
The company is now focusing on transforming its foundational technology into libraries that allow developers to build their own AI engines directly within their preferred engine environments. This transition from a character engine to a comprehensive framework includes a focus on observability and telemetry, critical for game developers to track and rectify issues efficiently.
Advancements in Local AI Models
A notable recent development is Inworld AI’s ability to utilize cloud resources to condense AI models for local deployment. This hybrid inference approach allows applications to leverage local resources autonomously while falling back on cloud-based resources when hardware constraints arise. For instance, a system may run predictions locally on a powerful PC but switch to cloud-processing on less capable devices such as the Nintendo Switch.
Another area of focus is the concept of controlled evolution in AI modeling. As the landscape of AI evolves rapidly, retaining and optimizing models that become outdated within six months presents a significant challenge. Inworld AI collaborates with developers to ensure they can utilize the best available models without requiring significant investments in specific cloud services.
Innovative Applications in AI Gaming
Recent successes highlight the potential of AI in gaming. For instance, the mobile RPG Status, by Wishroll, achieved an impressive 500, 000 users within 19 days, showcasing how engaging content can drive usage. Similarly, Little Umbrella’s party game The Last Show, along with the creative engine behind it, illustrates the fun of AI-driven real-time multiplayer interactions.
In collaboration with Streamlabs, Inworld has also developed a streaming assistant capable of performing multiple actions, such as adjusting game settings in Fortnite based on real-time game analysis and user interactions, all with extremely low latency.
The Role of AI Companions and Assistants
Gibbs describes a growing trend of AI companions in gaming, categorized as either disembodied or embodied. Disembodied companions, like the Streamlabs assistant, offer real-time coaching and walkthroughs. In contrast, embodied companions enhance onboarding experiences by interacting directly within game environments, providing suggestions and feedback as players navigate challenges.
Potential for Quality Assurance Using AI
While Inworld AI’s primary focus remains on player-facing applications, Gibbs suggests the potential for utilizing their technology in quality assurance testing. While they do not offer specific QA solutions, Inworld AI’s technology can be leveraged to prototype testing scenarios, assessing various AI interactions in rapid development environments.
Addressing Challenges in AI Implementation
One pressing concern in the AI space is the phenomenon known as “hallucinations, ”where AI generates outputs that deviate from expected results. Gibbs explains that with appropriate model training and data validation processes, such issues can be mitigated. The primary challenge for Inworld AI lies in maintaining character fidelity in line with intellectual property expectations, emphasizing the need for robust machine learning strategies.
Dynamic Crowds and Immersive Environments
Another fascinating development is Inworld AI’s exploration of dynamic crowd technology. Many studios focus on simply enlarging game worlds or enhancing visual fidelity; however, Gibbs advocates for making virtual environments feel more alive. By programming characters to interact dynamically with one another and their surroundings, the gaming experience becomes inherently more immersive and engaging.

Inworld AI is also working on a suite of tools that allow developers to implement their technologies more seamlessly. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, their framework provides templates that developers can customize to meet unique project requirements, ensuring compatibility across diverse platforms.

While specific AAA game collaborations remain under wraps, Gibbs indicates that significant announcements are expected this summer, which may feature Inworld AI’s technology prominently.
