The demand for high-efficiency power supply units (PSUs) is surging, leading to the introduction of the 80 PLUS Ruby certification—the newest standard designed to push the boundaries of power efficiency beyond existing benchmarks.
Introduction to the 80 PLUS Ruby Certification by CLEAResult
Power supply units are evaluated based on their efficiency ratings, commonly identified through the 80 PLUS certification. Ranging from the basic 80 Plus to the elite 80 Plus Titanium, manufacturers provide a variety of options aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of both consumer and enterprise systems. Historically, the 80 PLUS Titanium certification held the title for top efficiency across multiple load levels, but it has now been outdone by the newly announced 80 PLUS Ruby certification.
Achieving the highest standard of operations for data centers is critical as energy demand quickly grows and we are proud that the 80 PLUS Ruby certification is setting the example of what optimal data center energy efficiency can look like worldwide,

CLEAResult, a prominent provider of energy transition and sustainability services in North America, unveiled the Ruby certification in March. This new standard boasts an impressive potential efficiency rating of up to 96.5% under typical load conditions. While this figure may seem marginally superior to the Titanium level, that additional 0.5% efficiency can yield considerable energy savings for data centers.

Previously, 80 PLUS Titanium offered up to 96% efficiency at a 50% load. In contrast, the 80 PLUS Ruby certification surpasses these figures not just at 50% load but also at lower rates—achieving efficiencies of 91% at 10%, 95% at 20%, and 92% at 100% load. Remarkably, Ruby-certified power supplies can still maintain a high efficiency of 90% even when operating at just 5% load. This efficiency is especially beneficial in scenarios where resource demands are minimal, such as running smaller processes on servers.
It represents a next-level benchmark, providing the industry with a standard for both performance and energy usage.

Among the first to develop a PSU that meets this ambitious standard is Delta Electronics, a leading Chinese manufacturer. Their new 5, 500W PSU designed for AI applications boasts a remarkable 97.5% efficiency. As the demand for high-efficiency PSUs continues to rise, we can expect more models to emerge. However, it is worth noting that the 80 PLUS Ruby certification may not become prevalent in the mainstream consumer PSU market just yet.
