Chelsea Howe, Sunblink: From the outset, we envisioned a game that would be accessible across various platforms, making multi-platform functionality a core consideration. Our experience with Apple Arcade taught us valuable lessons in optimizing game performance for lower-spec devices, which proved beneficial across all versions. The detailed development for other platforms kicked off in early 2024, with our teams collaborating to leverage specialized platform knowledge for optimal outcomes.
Challenges in Porting and Content Expansion
What challenges did the team encounter while preparing ports for the Switch, PlayStation, and PC while also expanding content for Apple Arcade?
Howe: The primary challenge has been managing timelines effectively. Each platform follows distinct approval processes, leading to potential scheduling conflicts that can create confusion among team members. We also had to ensure each platform’s unique features were respected, such as perfecting controller functionality for the Nintendo Switch and meeting specific criteria for Steam Deck’s verification process.
Future Updates and Seasonal Content
How will future updates and seasonal content be managed across different platforms?
Howe: Our intention is to release seasonal event content simultaneously across all platforms. We will offer free updates in advance of events to ensure that every player can engage with the evolving story and reap the associated rewards together. The addition of new characters and regions requires extensive quality assurance, meaning while we provide incremental storylines on Apple Arcade, our approach will be more cohesive for Nintendo Switch and PC audiences, leading to staggered updates outside of event periods.

Howe: Our selection process is guided by two primary factors: the preferences of Sanrio and feedback from the fans. Sanrio offers a roster of characters they wish to highlight, but we strive to incorporate fan favorites as well. We pay close attention to annual Sanrio rankings and monitor official merchandise to gauge what resonates most with enthusiasts. My own collection of Cinnamoroll plushies is a testament to this dedication!
The Inspiration Behind City Town’s Character Usahana
What influenced the choice of Usahana as the representative character for City Town?
Howe: As we unfold more of City Town’s narrative, the reasoning behind our decision will become clearer. For now, Usahana’s design embodies joy and vibrancy, aiming to uplift office workers. Consequently, we envisioned an entire city themed around her aesthetics, contrasting the typical drab urban environments with something more colorful and optimistic.
The design ethos of City Town challenges conventional city norms, presenting a clean, lively, and optimistic space that is a true reflection of Usahana’s character.
Character Additions and Fan Favorites
Are there plans to introduce other lesser-known characters like Spottie Dottie or Kirimichan into the game?
Howe: Definitely! There’s a lot of enthusiasm for introducing niche characters. For instance, Nisetama-san, a friend of Gudetama, was featured in our Month of Meh event last year, and we aim to spotlight more unique characters in similar fashion, showcasing their distinct traits.
Crossover Characters and Future Collaborations
Is there a possibility of seeing crossover characters like Yoshikitty in Hello Kitty Island Adventure?
Howe: Currently, the complexities of licensing impede the inclusion of collaborative characters, but our team is passionate about characters like Yoshikitty and Adorozatorumary. While these inclusions may not be feasible at the moment, if we achieve greater success, we might attract collaborations in the future. One can always hope!
Lessons Learned During Development
What insights have you gained from the development of Hello Kitty Island Adventure over the years?
Howe: We have gained a richer understanding of the Hello Kitty universe than we ever anticipated. While we’re all somewhat familiar with Hello Kitty, the vast number of Sanrio characters and the depth of lore was astounding. The discovery of quirky characters and the surprise that Hello Kitty is not actually a feline expanded our horizons considerably.
In terms of gameplay, we’ve learned valuable lessons about merging cozy-style gameplay with open-world adventures—two genres with considerable overlap in their audiences—as we navigate the varying preferences of these groups.
Future Aspirations for Content Development
If there were no limitations, what biome or feature would you wish to incorporate into Hello Kitty Island Adventure?
Howe: Choosing just one is an impossible task! I envision a lush rainforest or jungle filled with puzzle caves, or perhaps a futuristic landscape that offers similar adventures. There’s also a personal desire to create an aspen forest area, reflecting our headquarters in Boulder, CO, with those stunning yellow leaves. Additionally, the character TOPHAT sparks curiosity about what a world inspired by him could look like.
Commitment to Ongoing Development
How long will you continue to issue updates and introduce new content for Hello Kitty Island Adventure?
Howe: While we have an extensive roadmap planned for the future, our commitment is directly linked to player engagement. As long as there’s an audience enjoying the game, we will continue to expand the world and enhance mechanics.
