Interview on the Development of Atelier Resleriana: Insights into The Red Alchemist and The White Guardian

New Horizons for Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian

Atelier Resleriana has faced challenges in gaining traction outside of Japan, with only a couple of titles, namely Forgotten Alchemy and Polar Night Liberator, managing to remain active. However, the upcoming release of Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian is set to reignite interest. Scheduled for launch on September 26, 2025, this title will be made available across consoles and PC, promising a fresh adventure in the Atelier universe. To gain insights about this forthcoming installment, Siliconera engaged with Junzo Hosoi, Managing Director at Gust, and Yasunori Sakuda, Executive Officer at Team Ninja.

Development Journey of Atelier Resleriana: Insights from the Team

Jenni Lada: When did the development for Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian commence?

Yasunori Sakuda: Following the announcement of Atelier Resleriana, we received numerous requests from fans wishing to experience Resleriana on consoles. This feedback encouraged us to explore creating a console version, and we officially kicked off development around the mobile game’s half-anniversary.

Influences from Previous Titles

Jenni Lada: What impact did Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and Polar Night Liberator have on the development of this new entry?

Sakuda: The CG elements and event sequences that were developed for Forgotten Alchemy and Polar Night Liberator significantly influenced our current project. Although they share the same world, we’ve made substantial enhancements to the game system to adapt it for console usage, resulting in a host of new features.

Accessibility for New Players

Jenni Lada: How will you assist fans who may not have played the previous titles, Forgotten Alchemy and Polar Night Liberator, in getting acclimated to Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian?

Sakuda: This installment is set in the same universe as the earlier games, yet it introduces a new narrative set in a distinct region during the same timeline. Players can delve into the game without prior experience of the mobile titles. For instance, the initial area players will explore, Hallfein, is entirely new, allowing new players to jump right in.

Throughout the game, various unique maps are accessible beyond Hallfein, promising a wealth of exploration opportunities.

Character Dynamics and Inspirations

Jenni Lada: The game features a male lead alongside a female protagonist, echoing dynamics seen in earlier games like Atelier Escha & Logy and Atelier Iris 2. How did these previous titles inform character development?

Junzo Hosoi: With the introduction of our male protagonist after a long absence, titles like Atelier Escha & Logy and Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny served as excellent references in crafting their character roles.

We’re maintaining the tradition where the female protagonist is closely linked to alchemy, whereas the male protagonist will employ a different strengthening system.

Connecting with the Series’ Legacy

Jenni Lada: Will Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian reflect upon past alchemists and earlier installments like Atelier Iris or Mana Khemia?

Hosoi: Characters from Forgotten Alchemy and Polar Night Liberator will return. Additionally, popular characters such as Raze and Vayne from Mana Khemia will feature, alongside new dialogues that enhance the gaming experience.

Jenni Lada: We’ve seen mentions of characters like Totori and Sophie in this new title. How many memorable characters can players expect, and how was this selection determined?

Sakuda: Approximately 17 legendary characters will make an appearance in Hallfein, sharing their stories and contributions to the Resleriana universe, even if they won’t join battles.

Future Possibilities for Remasters

Jenni Lada: Given Gust’s history with remakes, would you consider developing a collection for Mana Khemia or the Atelier Iris trilogy for contemporary audiences?

Hosoi: Both franchises are highly valued, and we have explored the possibility of re-releasing them as collections. However, various challenges have hindered these plans. If there is significant interest from fans, it could very well increase the chances of making it happen.

What Lies Ahead

Anticipation is building for Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian, which will be available on the Switch, PS5, and PC on September 26, 2025.
