Exploring the Dynamic World of Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds is set to introduce players to an expansive experience featuring dynamic environments, complete with evolving weather conditions and an array of both familiar and new monsters. Recently, Siliconera had the opportunity to preview the game and engage in a conversation with key developers, including Series Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, Executive and Art Director Kaname Fujioka, and Director Yuya Tokuda. Their insights shed light on the game’s intriguing locales, such as the Scarlet Forest, and the introduction of new creatures like Lala Barina.
Challenges in Creating Dynamic Environments
Which environmental element posed the greatest challenge during development?
Kaname Fujioka: The challenge of developing each locale is immense, especially with environmental changes occurring in real time. Not only does the terrain evolve, but the color palettes must adjust concurrently to reflect these changes.
For instance, during the “Sand Tide” event in the game, we must ensure that it manifests fully to achieve significant environmental transformation. Different seasons, such as “Plenty” and “Fallow,” require careful attention as well. In the “Plenty” season, lush greenery thrives, while “Fallow” sees vegetation thin out. Capturing these transitions in real-time proved to be particularly arduous.
Another complex area was the Scarlet Forest, with rich biodiversity and dramatically changing water colors—from clear blue to crimson. Managing these transformations while maintaining gameplay fluidity was a considerable hurdle.
Revolutionizing Weapon Mechanics
How did earlier Monster Hunter entries influence the development of weapon actions in Wilds?
Yuya Tokuda: In Monster Hunter Wilds, we feature 14 distinct weapon types, each with its unique concept. While the foundational concepts remain unchanged, we have introduced new actions and move sets to better align with the game’s style. Our goal was to create smoother connections among actions, enhancing the gameplay experience for players.
Natural Inspirations Behind Monsters
How did real-world animals and insects inspire the design of monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Fujioka: When conceptualizing Lala Barina, we did not strictly model it after an existing spider species. Instead, we sought to create a unique, spider-like creature. Our design process focused on developing swift, side-to-side movement patterns that create confusion, complemented by elemental attacks like paralysis.
The design team also aimed to integrate graceful movements, reminiscent of ballet—a twirl effect was included in its animations. Moreover, to enhance its aesthetic, we incorporated design elements inspired by roses, featuring a rose-like abdomen that would reveal itself during elemental attacks, culminating in a striking character design.
The Allure of Spider-Inspired Equipment
What makes spider-inspired monsters lead to beautiful equipment designs?
Fujioka: There’s a striking contrast at play. While spiders may elicit discomfort, the armors crafted from their designs are often stunning and elegant, creating a fascinating dichotomy.
Future Speculations: The Return of Lagiacrus
Will we see Lagiacrus in future Monster Hunter titles?
Mana Takahashi: Lagiacrus is a cherished character from Monster Hunter Tri, a design we both hold dear. Its return is something we certainly consider.
Tokuda: We recognize the monster’s strong fanbase and want its comeback to feel meaningful and well-timed.
Ryozo Tsujimoto: Lagiacrus is immensely popular, particularly outside Japan. It’s important to us that we introduce it with intention rather than randomly.
Tokuda: We approach this subject with care since Lagiacrus holds a special place in the hearts of many players.
