On September 4, 2024, artist Jeffrey Lewis took to Instagram to accuse Sabrina Carpenter of allegedly stealing his artwork. Jeffrey asserted that the pop star replicated his “vinyltine”vinyl-heart design for her Emails I Can’t Send tour poster, noting the similarities in both font and overall design.
The artist revealed that he has been selling tote bags featuring his viny heart artwork outside Sabrina Carpenter’s sold-out stadium shows. In his carousel post, he included a video of himself holding a sign that said:
“Sabrina stole my art!!! Get the original!! (Ask me for the story)”
Social media users quickly reacted to Jeffrey Lewis’ post, encouraging discussions in the comment section about the alleged art theft. One user commented:
“Wow, that’s an absolutely blatant ripoff. Hope you get some compensation.”
Many users drew parallels between Jeffrey’s artwork and Sabrina’s poster, criticizing the Espresso singer and her marketing team:
One user humorously suggested buying a ‘Sabrina stole my art’ sign, to which Jeffrey replied:
“The Madison Square Garden security told me to move along”— Jeffrey Lewis comments on selling tote bags outside Sabrina Carpenter’s stadium
In his post, Jeffrey Lewis claimed that he created the “vinyltine”vinyl-heart artwork in 2012 and that it was posted on Rough Trade Records’ Facebook page that same year. He mentioned that he often reposts it on Valentine’s Day, noting that this isn’t the first time his artwork has been bootlegged.
Additionally, the artist shared a video of himself selling tote bags featuring his original artwork outside Sabrina Carpenter’s show at Madison Square Garden, which occurred on September 29, 2024. Jeffrey remarked on the situation:
“I’ve been selling my tote bags outside her sold-out stadium gigs this week (as seen in these pix!). Yes, the Madison Square Garden security told me to move along, as seen here! It was just a fun experiment to set up my table and see what might happen. Like, ‘what would Kramer do?’”
“It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize”— Sabrina Carpenter addresses comments on her dressing sense
Sabrina Carpenter recently made it onto the TIME100 Next list, which highlights 100 emerging leaders globally. This honor was featured on the same magazine cover shared by artist Jeffrey Lewis in his post.
In an interview with the publication on October 2, 2024, the Please Please Please singer discussed her albums and addressed critiques about her fashion choices. She expressed that her performance costumes are a reflection of the femininity she has always celebrated. Sabrina stated:
“And if right now that means corsets and garter belts and fuzzy robes or whatever the f*ck, then that’s what that means.”
The singer also acknowledged influential artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera for paving the way for bold fashion statements. She noted that despite the past precedents, she continues to face strong opinions about her choices.
Sabrina Carpenter shared her thoughts with the outlet, stating:
“It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize, because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing.”
She added:
“If the one thing that helps you do that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you’ve got to do.”
Sabrina Carpenter is currently in the midst of her Short n’ Sweet tour, her first arena tour following her sixth studio album of the same name. The tour kicked off in Columbus, U.S., on September 23, 2024, and will wrap up in Milan, Italy, on March 26, 2025.
