Despite Intel’s significant presence in the tech industry, its ventures within the AI market have fallen short of expectations. The company’s most recent AI chip, the Gaudi 3 accelerator, struggled to gain traction compared to competitors such as NVIDIA and AMD. Following the leadership shift under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel scrapped its previously anticipated Falcon Shores GPU series in favor of the new Jaguar Shores lineup, which has now made its debut.

Andreas Schilling recently posted an image of the Jaguar Shores testing vehicle on X, noting that it is being utilized by Intel’s thermal engineering team to optimize cooling solutions. The chip is integrated into a development board, displaying a substantial size with dimensions of approximately 92.5mm x 92.5mm. This size suggests that it is designed for high-performance computing (HPC) applications. The prototype also features four distinct tiles and eight HBM memory sites.

Currently, specific information regarding the architecture of Intel’s upcoming AI chips remains limited. However, the company has indicated that Jaguar Shores will be positioned as a rack-scale solution, marking an important step for Intel in competing effectively in the AI arena. This new solution is expected to align with Intel’s forthcoming Diamond Rapids Xeon CPUs.
As of now, Intel’s strategy for expanding its presence in the AI sector appears to be in flux. The company is grappling with financial and operational challenges that necessitate prioritizing core business areas and minimizing losses.
