Pat Gelsinger has expressed his support for Intel’s newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, hoping that he will successfully conclude the ongoing “revitalization”efforts of Team Blue.
The Challenge of Short-Termism: Insights from Gelsinger on Intel’s Future
Since Gelsinger took the helm of Intel in 2021, the company has undergone significant changes, particularly in its foundry operations. Unfortunately, his tenure came to a premature end in December 2024 when he was replaced by Lip-Bu Tan. In a recent interview with CNBC, Gelsinger conveyed his optimism for Tan’s leadership and offered essential advice on navigating Wall Street’s expectations.
I was committed to and wanting to finish that story on the revitalization of Intel and with the board, the company, and now with Lip-Bu’s leadership, you are really cheering them on to finish.
Because the role that Intel plays in the semiconductor industry is critical and one that’s important not just for the industry but for the US, so I could not be more supportive of the team and Lip-Bu in finishing their journey.
Reflecting on Intel’s recent struggles, Gelsinger emphasized that building a “next-generation technology fab network”demands substantial investment, a financial commitment that has been difficult for the company to sustain amidst Wall Street’s expectations. He remains convinced that his IDM 2.0 strategy—which aimed to foster a premier foundry—is still a valid roadmap for Intel, one that promises significant “capital returns.”

Gelsinger criticized the prevalent short-termism mentality of Wall Street, highlighting that the ambitious transformation of a company cannot be realized under the pressure of maintaining stock value in the immediate term. Such urgency conflicted with his long-term vision for Intel, contributing to his eventual departure from the CEO position.
As Tan embarks on his journey as CEO, Gelsinger warns that he will face significant obstacles from Wall Street but expresses confidence that Tan and his team will make steady progress in advancing the IDM 2.0 strategy launched during Gelsinger’s leadership. Although it’s too early to predict the direction Tan will take, it’s clear he has a daunting task ahead as he steps into his new role at Intel.
