Intel Nova Lake Features 6th Gen NPU According to Early Linux Kernel Patch

Intel is set to innovate with a next-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in its upcoming Nova Lake CPU family, marking a significant departure from the NPU architecture utilized in the Panther Lake series.

Nova Lake NPU: Advancements for Enhanced AI Performance

Intel’s strategy is clear: each new generation of its processors will feature improved NPU capabilities. The Core Ultra 200V, part of the Lunar Lake line, introduced its own advanced NPU, distinguishing itself from the Arrow Lake, despite their simultaneous release periods. While Arrow Lake relied on the third-generation NPU (NPU3) found in Meteor Lake, Lunar Lake embraced a subsequent NPU4, reflecting Intel’s commitment to ongoing technological advancements.

A recent report has further confirmed that the upcoming Nova Lake processors will not share the Panther Lake’s NPU. Panther Lake, set to launch soon, will incorporate a 5th generation NPU (NPU5), while early indications suggest that Nova Lake will leverage a 6th generation NPU (NPU6).This transition is anticipated in the coming year, aligning with Intel’s roadmap for continual enhancement in processing capabilities.

According to Phoronix, a recent 15-line patch submitted to the Linux Kernel source tree has validated this advancement. This update introduces support for a new PCI Device ID that recognizes the Intel “NPU6″component (with device ID series 60xx) and the relevant firmware file pu_60xx_v1.bin. Despite the new developments, the patch maintains compatibility with prior generation pathways associated with NPU5.

This shift indicates Intel’s intention to bolster AI functionalities across its upcoming processors, even as market penetration for AI-enabled PCs remains relatively modest. Despite current demand for its Raptor Lake chips prompting a cost increase, Intel is prioritizing higher AI performance metrics in its next-generation offerings.

The Panther Lake’s NPU5 is capable of delivering up to 50 TOPS (Tera Operations per Second) for AI tasks, and expectations suggest that NPU6 will push these limits further. This enhancement positions Nova Lake systems to achieve Copilot+ certification, although the exact performance metrics remain to be seen. Given Intel’s decision to substantially improve its NPU architecture beyond one generation, we can anticipate significant gains in AI capabilities with Nova Lake.
