In a significant move to overhaul its semiconductor leadership, Intel’s CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has introduced a new position dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI).This initiative aims to bolster the company’s competitiveness in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Strategic Restructuring at Intel: New AI Leadership Emerges
Facing challenges across various divisions, including subpar performance in the foundry and CPU segments, Intel is at a crucial crossroads. Following the departure of former CEO Pat Gelsinger, Tan is committed to implementing tough decisions that may bring short-term disruptions but are intended to yield long-term benefits. According to a report by Reuters, Tan has initiated a “flattening”of the company’s leadership structure, enabling new teams to report directly to him.
As part of this restructuring, Intel’s Data Center (DC) and AI divisions will now operate under Tan, who has also appointed Michelle Johnston Holthaus, the Products CEO, to oversee these sectors. Furthermore, Sachin Katti has been designated as the new chief technology officer and AI chief, reflecting a strategic push towards rejuvenating Intel’s presence in artificial intelligence.
I want to roll up my sleeves with the engineering and product teams to learn what’s needed to strengthen our solutions. As Michelle and I drive this work, we plan to evolve and expand her role with more details to come in the future.

This strategic realignment comes on the heels of Intel’s AI business underperforming compared to its competitors. The company’s inability to seize early opportunities in the AI sector has left it lagging, especially given that its Gaudi AI accelerators have not been able to compete effectively with offerings from NVIDIA and AMD. Tan’s direct involvement in the AI division suggests an urgent need for a turnaround.

Moreover, the landscape is further complicated by ongoing export restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, which hinder Intel’s ability to ship its latest hardware to China. This limitation presents an additional challenge as Tan’s leadership seeks to revitalize Intel’s AI endeavors in a constrained market. Observers are keen to see how Tan’s strategic decisions will unfold in the coming months.
