Insomniac Games Proposed New Addition to Major Franchise, But PlayStation Quickly Rejected It

Insomniac Games recently revealed that they had proposed an idea for Resistance 4, but PlayStation ultimately rejected the concept. This information comes from Ted Price, the soon-to-be ex-president of Insomniac. The last major title in the Resistance series was released in 2011, and the online servers for the acclaimed first-person shooter were discontinued just three years later. Additionally, a PS Vita entry titled Burning Skies was launched in 2012 by a different developer, marking the last major contribution to the franchise—compounding a sense of finality around the series.

In a recent video interview featured on Kinda Funny Games, which was highlighted by Insider-Gaming, Price opened up about his impending retirement after more than three decades in the gaming industry. During this reflective discussion, he touched upon various missed opportunities, including the cherished yet unrealized pitch for Resistance 4 that had captivated the Insomniac team.

He elaborated on the in-game alternate history, emphasizing the exciting possibilities it could open for the next installment. Having served as the creative director for the initial entries, Price mentioned his personal attachment to the series, stating, “I love this franchise.”He acknowledged the persistent inquiries from fans about the possibility of a new Resistance title, adding, “we pitched Resistance 4 and it was cool, ”even though he cannot provide any updates on its future.

A Disheartening Loss for Fans

Launched in 2006 as a PlayStation 3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man garnered praise for its inventive take on the first-person shooter genre. The game and its sequels captivated audiences by depicting a cooperative struggle between post-WWII British and American forces against an extraterrestrial menace. All three entries in the series were well-received, known for their engaging gameplay, unique storytelling, and cherished local co-op options.

Knowing that Insomniac had a compelling vision for a fourth game only amplifies the disappointment surrounding its absence. Fans can only hope for a day when the Resistance franchise might be revived and treated to new adventures. However, for now, Insomniac and PlayStation appear to be directing their focus toward other ongoing projects, leaving the future of the Resistance series uncertain.
