Perrie Edwards of the girl group Little Mix shared her thoughts on the tragic death of Liam Payne, a former member of One Direction. In her conversation on The Happy Place podcast with host Fearne Cotton, aired on October 28, 2024, Edwards addressed the darker aspects of fame, emphasizing the importance of addressing online harassment and providing adequate support within the music industry. She expressed:
“There are no repercussions for people’s remarks on the internet. Individuals in this industry aren’t well taken care of; they’re often idolized.”
Liam Payne tragically passed away on October 16 after a fall from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Devastated by the news, Edwards reflected:
“It’s incredibly sad and heartbreaking. My heart aches for his family, friends, and Cheryl, as well as for his little boy.”
Similar to One Direction, Perrie Edwards along with her bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Jesy Nelson, formed Little Mix one year later on X Factor. Before Nelson’s departure in 2020, they were among the most prominent girl bands in the industry, ultimately entering a hiatus in 2022.
“Our careers were very aligned”— Perrie Edwards shares the impact of Liam Payne’s passing on her Little Mix sisters
Edwards conveyed her sorrow over Liam Payne’s untimely death, labeling it as “devastating.”She mentioned that her Little Mix friends were similarly affected, with Leigh-Anne Pinnock expressing that the situation felt uncomfortably “close to home.”Edwards said:
“We were messaging each other, and I think Leigh-Anne said, ‘it’s very close to home.’ Our paths were so intertwined, and we had a close connection with them. It truly is heartbreaking; it gave me a strange feeling when I saw the news headline,”she told the podcast host.
Furthermore, she revealed that her bond with One Direction made the news even more distressing for her. Edwards described it as “absolutely awful”and expressed empathy for what Liam Payne’s family must be enduring.
Edwards elaborated on the sacrifices that come with fame, explaining how public figures often face hostility stemming from their visibility. She mentioned:
“They’re revered like deities, only to be torn down by the same society. But at the end of the day, they’re just human beings. Shouldn’t we establish guidelines for social media? I find it unbearable—I try to avoid it, as I can spiral into a pit of negative comments.”
Continuing, she emphasized the distinction between success and fame, stating that while success brings joy and fulfillment—”You’re engaging in something you adore, reaping benefits, and everything feels wonderful,”—the downside of fame can be overwhelming. She shared:
“You don’t immediately consider the challenges that accompany that level of fame, and it can be stressful. This is why I surround myself with as many uplifting people as possible, especially during tough times.”
Additionally, she mentioned that occasionally, she brings her therapist to work to help manage panic attacks.
Perrie Edwards previously dated Zayn Malik, Liam Payne’s former bandmate, after they met on X Factor in 2011. Though they became engaged in 2013, their relationship ended in 2015.
In the days leading up to his passing, Liam Payne was in Argentina for Niall Horan’s concert, another One Direction member. His final Snapchat post showed him enjoying a vacation with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
Liam Payne is survived by his seven-year-old son, Bear, along with his parents and two sisters.
