In the world of Foundation, managing space effectively poses a challenge for players. Often, villagers do not build homes in preferred locations, and structures like sheep and wheat farms can occupy substantial portions of your land.
To optimize your village space, increasing housing density is crucial. This involves a series of strategic decisions and upgrades to transform smaller homes into larger buildings that accommodate more residents. Below, we’ll delve into the steps required to elevate your housing density in Foundation.
Understanding Medium-Density Housing in Foundation

Housing density refers to the number of individuals a residence can accommodate. Initially, homes in Foundation can support only two residents. By progressing to medium density, this capacity increases to six individuals per household, while high-density housing can accommodate up to ten. However, to foster a sense of security and enable denser housing configurations, players must satisfy several prerequisites in this engaging city-building simulator.
Steps to Upgrade to Medium Density in Foundation

To foster medium density, specific requirements must be met surrounding each home. Begin by unlocking the Manor House under the Labour section in the Progression menu. Unlocking the Manor House grants access to both the Great Hall Manor Home and the Tax Manor Home. Following this, increase your Labour Splendour to a minimum of 25.
Increasing Your Labour Splendour
The Labour Splendour metric, depicted as an olive-colored star on the top right of your information bar, is crucial for upgrades. The number beneath this star indicates your current Level of Splendour. To enhance this value, construct decorative elements associated with the olive star for your monuments, as illustrated below.

Establishing Patrol Coverage for Houses
Upon reaching at least 25 Labour Splendour alongside a prosperity rating of 10, players should acquire both the Bailiff Office and the Watchtower from the Labour section of the Progression menu. Building a Bailiff Office Manor House and assigning a Bailiff is essential, as is constructing a Watchtower. To ensure complete coverage of your village, consider adding additional patrolmen and watchmen via the Watchtower, using drawing tools to designate patrol areas that encompass all residential zones.

Implementing Light Fortification for Enhanced Density
With patrol coverage established, the next step is to add Light Fortification. Access the Fortifications menu to construct a city wall surrounding your desired homes, ensuring all residences are enclosed and complemented by several gates. It’s crucial to place Guard Locations for the Watchmen at each gate to monitor for safety.

Once these walls are erected, your homes will gradually upgrade to Medium Density. Be mindful of your builder’s availability when expanding patrol routes to ensure a smooth transition.
Strategies for Upgrading to High Density in Foundation

To achieve High Density, your homes require Heavy Fortification. This significant upgrade transitions residential capacity from six to ten individuals, providing substantial benefits. To unlock Heavy Fortification, you’ll need a Labour Splendour of 150, a Prosperity rating of 100, and a Labour point investment of 35 to access City Fortifications. Once achieved, constructing City Watchtowers while ensuring each home falls within their sightlines will automatically elevate your housing density to High.
To construct each City Watchtower, gather the following resources:
- 20 Stone
- 10 Polished Stone
- 5 Tools
