Ever since her retirement from tennis after the 2022 US Open, Williams has been involved in numerous entrepreneurial ventures. As a 23-time Grand Slam champion, she has utilized her success to invest in a variety of industries, including consumer products, healthcare, and e-commerce, through her VC Fund ‘Serena Ventures’.
Serena Williams launched her own makeup brand, ‘WYN Beauty’, adding yet another accomplishment to her list. Fans can purchase her debut collection at Ulta Beauty stores and on their website starting April 7th.
The role of tennis in Serena Williams’ creation of WYN Beauty
During her interview with Byrdie, Serena Williams discussed her highly anticipated makeup brand, WYN Beauty. The former World No. 1 shared how, as a professional athlete, she would often have to touch up her makeup before facing the media. This experience served as the inspiration for WYN Beauty and helped lay the foundation for the brand.
“Those moments are the foundation of the brand. After playing on center court in front of millions of people, I’d have to do press. There was a point where I was talking to the press every single day. I had to figure out how I wanted to show up, but I only had a few minutes after a match to do my makeup,”Williams said.
“It all started with the skin tint. I would often mix my foundation and sun cream because I couldn’t find a skin tint I loved. I realized that if I’m having this problem, other people are as well. From there, I started thinking about how I could create functional and really cool products,”she continued.
The tennis star also discussed the restriction on makeup for players, prompting her to use lipstick and eyeliner as a means of self-expression.
“Tennis is different than other sports. Sprinters and gymnasts, for example, can wear a full face of makeup. With tennis, you can play for three hours and have sweat pouring down your face. So I had to find little ways to enhance my features. It started with the beads—that was a way to express myself. From there, I leaned into eyeliner and lipstick.”
The packaging for WYN Beauty’s makeup collection has been greatly influenced by tennis, with all items being presented in a vibrant chartreuse hue, reminiscent of the color of tennis balls. The brand’s website states that this color holds a special significance for Williams, as it symbolizes energy and boldness.
