Apple’s Evolution Towards an All-Screen iPhone
Recent trends suggest that Apple is gradually minimizing the front-facing cutout on its iPhones. In the coming years, advancements in technology may enable the complete embedding of components, including the camera, behind the display. This shift is anticipated to coincide with the launch of Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone.
Rumored In-Display Face ID Technology
Digital Chat Station, a reliable source on social media platform Weibo, recently speculated that the iPhone 18 series will feature a punch-hole cutout, while the models rolling out in 2027 will see the front-facing camera relocated behind the display. This isn’t their first mention of such plans, indicating an ongoing trend in Apple’s design philosophy.
The suggestion has raised questions about whether the Face ID components will also be integrated behind the OLED screen. Previous predictions made by the same leak source implied that the TrueDepth camera would be positioned similarly to the front-facing sensor, further enhancing the seamless look of future devices.
A Look Ahead at iPhone Naming Conventions
Should Apple introduce the iPhone 18 series in 2026, speculation arises about whether the 2027 lineup will be dubbed the iPhone 19. However, there are indications that Apple might opt for a name change to iPhone 20 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic smartphone.
This strategic renaming reflects the importance of the milestone for Apple, especially considering it coincides with the decade mark since the launch of the iPhone X. The rumored lineup is expected to include six variants, but sticking with the iPhone 19 label for this release might feel inconsistent with its historical significance.
However, not all industry experts are in agreement regarding the timeline of Apple’s design overhaul. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), suggests a more gradual transition, predicting that the fully ‘notchless’ iPhone will emerge by 2030 rather than in 2027. Given his track record in the tech sector, his insights lend significant weight to this speculation.
