Enhancing Your Experience with Gemini: Quick Fixes for Lag Issues
As many users are discovering, Gemini has emerged as a popular AI assistant choice, largely due to its ability to easily create custom gems. Compared to competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini appears to have fewer operational restrictions. However, concerns linger about how Google may adjust its strategy in the future, particularly regarding advertising variations similar to YouTube.
While I personally find Gemini effective for various tasks, one drawback I’ve encountered on the Android version is a noticeable lag when navigating through gems. This lag isn’t the result of lengthy conversations but emerges during basic interactions, such as initiating a chat or transitioning through different sections of the app. Although the lag isn’t consistent, it frequently disrupts the user experience. After analyzing this issue, I want to share the solution I found that significantly improved performance.

Identifying the Source of Lag
My first step was to disable the Gemini app activity that tracks chat histories. Surprisingly, this action led to an immediate increase in speed. Nevertheless, this approach is somewhat extreme since it completely halts the saving of chat history. By turning off the Gemini app activity, I inadvertently disabled the integration with other apps.
However, if you prefer to retain your chat history while minimizing lag, you can disable individual apps instead. This adjustment proved effective. You can keep the essential features while experiencing a noticeable speed boost with fewer active apps.
How to Disable Apps in Gemini
Disabling apps within Gemini is a straightforward process. Follow these steps:
- Open the Gemini app on your Android device.
- Tap on your profile picture located at the top right corner.
- Select “Apps”to view your options.
- Toggle off the apps that you prefer not to use.
In my case, I chose to disable all apps because I found them more distracting than helpful. However, feel free to enable any that you find necessary.

The Impact on Performance
From what I’ve observed, while this method does not completely eliminate sluggishness during long messages, turning off unused apps significantly contributes to a smoother interaction overall. If you notice that the responses become slower as the chat progresses, consider starting a new conversation to refresh the app’s responsiveness.
We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments below. I have yet to test Gemini on iOS, so it remains unclear if similar lagging issues are present there. If you experience slower performance on the iOS version, disabling Gemini apps could also enhance your user experience.
