Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may soon be treated to the return of Thor, particularly following a compelling deleted scene from Loki season 2, which alludes to potential storylines for Thor 5. Chris Hemsworth’s iconic portrayal of the God of Thunder hasn’t graced the screen in either season of Loki, yet his brother, Loki, has had a notable presence across the Multiverse. While numerous adversaries could confront Thor in the upcoming sequel, this scene hints at a lesser-known Thor villain that piques interest.
While a third season of Loki has not been confirmed, Tom Hiddleston’s reprisal seems inevitable. Currently depicted as the God of Stories holding the Multiverse together, Loki is expected to play a significant role in upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Naturally, any Thor film would likely feature him, especially as Loki has now transitioned to more of an antihero, paving the way for new antagonists to rise in Thor 5.
Loki’s Deleted Scene Suggests Villains for Thor 5
The recently revealed deleted scene from Loki season 2 drops significant MCU names, hinting at three formidable potential villains for Thor 5. Among the discussed characters are well-known figures like Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and Heimdall (Idris Elba). Additionally, names such as Bor, Amora, Absorbing Man, and Hercules are brought up as adversaries that Loki and Thor could potentially face in the next installment.
While Amora, the Enchantress, features in the dialogue, her inclusion appears doubtful due to Sylvie’s similar powers showcased within the series. Initially leading to speculation about Sophia Di Martino’s character, Sylvie ultimately emerged as a unique creation, distancing herself from Amora. This nuance complicates the potential for Amora’s appearance in the MCU.
Hercules, portrayed by Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso in Thor: Love and Thunder, is another formidable contender, having been tasked by Zeus (Russell Crowe) in the film’s post-credit scene with the mission to eliminate Thor. This subtly sets the stage for his role in Thor 5, perhaps assembling a cadre of powerful beings to challenge Thor. Furthermore, Absorbing Man, whose real name is Carl “Crusher”Creel, previously appeared within the MCU, making him a nomenclature of interest for fans.
Understanding Absorbing Man
Absorbing Man made his debut in the pages of Journey into Mystery #114 back in 1965. This character, once a boxer, obtained the ability to absorb the properties of objects he touched after consuming a drink tainted with Loki’s magical potion. His inaugural battle against Thor ended with him defeated and floating through space, only to later be rescued by Loki, who aided him in reaching Asgard in pursuit of greater powers.
Creel is widely recognized for engaging various heroes, including Hulk and Spider-Man. His intricate history includes being part of key Marvel events like Secret Wars and a romantic subplot involving Titania, played by Jameela Jamil in She-Hulk. His connections within the MCU further heighten his viability as a candidate for Thor 5.
It is important to note that Absorbing Man was previously portrayed by Brian Patrick Wade in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where he ultimately met his end in a confrontation involving gravitonium. While his continuity within the MCU remains somewhat ambiguous, the potential for recasting exists, especially since the Loki in the series originates from a different timeline than the one fans initially met in Thor.
As fans ponder the future of Thor 5, concrete information is scarce. The conclusion of Thor: Love and Thunder suggests Thor’s return, potentially in ensemble features, rather than solo films. Hemsworth’s participation in upcoming Avengers titles appears certain, especially as the narrative trajectory of Thor seeks resolution alongside other characters. While Taika Waititi has expressed he will not reprise his directing role, he mentioned that any new villain would need to surpass the threat posed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Amidst fluctuating fan opinions on the franchise’s direction, a fifth standalone film would set an unprecedented record for the MCU, though Hemsworth’s continued portrayal remains a strong likelihood.
