While the supply chain constraints faced by Apple might not resonate as strongly with gamers, the implications for the price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 are likely to be of greater concern.

Nintendo’s Latest Console Announcement

Nintendo unveiled its highly anticipated console during a lengthy Nintendo Direct event on Wednesday. Gamers were immediately made aware of the pricing structure: the standalone console will retail for $449.99 USD, while a bundle that features the newly launched Mario Kart World will be available for $499.99 USD.

Manufacturing Relocation and Tariff Implications

In 2019, Nintendo shifted a portion of its hardware production from China to Vietnam and Cambodia. While this relocation was significant, Nintendo maintained that it was not a strategic move to evade tariffs amid rising trade tensions between the U. S.and China.

The tariffs Trump announced later on Wednesday, just hours after Nintendo’s presentation, include a 46% tariff on imports from Vietnam and a 49% tariff on goods from Cambodia. These could have far-reaching effects on the global pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Upcoming Tariff Details

Beginning April 5, 2025, a baseline 10% tariff will apply to all exporters to the United States. Countries like Cambodia and Vietnam, which are facing steeper tariffs, will see these increased rates commence on April 9, 2025. Notably, the 10% base tariff is additive, meaning it will not replace any existing tariffs imposed on these countries.

Potential Price Increases for Consumers

Unless negotiations yield a favorable outcome such as reduced tariffs or exemptions for specific exports to the United States, consumers may face even higher prices for the Nintendo Switch 2 than currently anticipated. The prospect of escalating costs casts a shadow over the release of this much-anticipated console.
