“Imagine this happening in tennis…both players drop their rackets & start fighting”: Boris Becker reacts to New York Rangers & New Jersey Devils brawl
Boris Becker, a renowned tennis player, has recently responded to a violent altercation that occurred during an NHL game between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils.
The altercation took place during the opening faceoff of the match on Wednesday, April 3, involving all ten players. The central altercation featured Rangers’ Matt Rempe and New Jersey’s Kurtis MacDermid facing off.
Last month, Rempe and MacDermid had a previous encounter where MacDermid offered to fight, but Rempe refused. However, during the game, Rempe delivered an elbow hit that resulted in Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler being knocked out of the game. As a result, Rempe was suspended for four games.
Despite the initial chaos, the Rangers were able to secure a 4-3 victory in the intense match. However, the fight that broke out was the most memorable event of the evening, resulting in the ejection of eight players from the game.
The video of the fight was posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Brad Gilbert, Andre Agassi’s former coach. Gilbert noted the rarity of similar incidents in other sports such as baseball, football, and basketball.
“Nuts 🥜 hockey 🏒 in baseball ⚾️ football 🏈 especially basketball 🏀 suspension would be extremely lengthy,”Gilbert wrote.
Boris Becker was drawn to this tweet and reacted to Gilbert’s post by discussing a hypothetical scenario in tennis where players would abandon their rackets and engage in a physical altercation.
“Imagine this happening in tennis 🎾…both players drop their rackets and start fighting,”the German wrote.
Andy Roddick weighs in on Novak Djokovic’s potential reunion with Boris Becker
Andy Roddick shared his views on Novak Djokovic’s choice to end his coaching relationship with Goran Ivanisevic and speculated on potential future steps for the Serbian player. These could potentially involve reuniting with Boris Becker, who helped Djokovic achieve six Majors, including a career Grand Slam.
Upon reflecting on this development, Roddick contemplated who could potentially take over for Ivanisevic.
“Seems like he always kind of ends back up with [Marian Vajda] when something like this happens. That’s happened a couple of times,”Roddick said during a conversation on Tennis Channel.
Djokovic and Vajda’s partnership has remained strong since 2006, even with the addition of coaches such as Becker (2013-2016) and Agassi (2017-2018). In 2018, Djokovic reunited with Vajda and briefly worked with Ivanisevic until 2022.
Despite Ivanisevic’s departure, Roddick remarked that it wouldn’t be unexpected for Djokovic to rehire past coaches, such as Boris Becker who was previously part of the team.
“This is pure speculation; I know nothing but it wouldn’t shock me to see Becker in the mix of that conversation,”he said.
In February 2024, Becker and Holger Rune ended their coaching relationship, which had been the most recent one for Becker.
