Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt, both prominent faces in modern horror cinema, have recently navigated the terrifying landscapes of Scream VI and Totally Killer. However, they encountered a uniquely unsettling experience while filming their latest slasher film, Heart Eyes. Directed by Josh Ruben, this horror-comedy combines creative killings with the charm of Valentine’s Day, featuring a script crafted by Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy, and Phillip Murphy.
In Heart Eyes, Gooding portrays Jay Simmons, who finds himself entangled in a romantic liaison with Holt’s character, Ally, while simultaneously being a prime suspect in a string of murders investigated by Detectives Hobbs and Shaw—one of whom is portrayed by Jordana Brewster. This clever blend of romance, humor, and horror is designed to carve out a niche in the genre, reminiscent of the iconic Scream franchise, suggesting rich potential for future installments.
Recently, ScreenRant conducted an engaging interview with Gooding and Holt, delving into the nuances of their genre-defying roles in Heart Eyes. They explored how the themed killer in their movie compares to legendary figures from the Scream series, shared insights on their favorite scenes together, and remarked on the killer’s chilling costume.
Mason Gooding & Olivia Holt: Surviving While Building Romantic Chemistry in Heart Eyes
“We made each other feel very safe, especially on long days that were covered in blood and sweat and tears.”

ScreenRant: Mason, you faced the notorious Ghostface Killer previously, and now you’re squaring off against the Heart Eyes Killer, who is poised to become a new icon in horror. How do these villains compare, and what’s your strategy for surviving their terror?
Mason Gooding: It’s interesting because the Heart Eyes Killer (HEK) brings a raw brutality that lacks a clear motive, offering a different kind of horror compared to the meticulous and calculated style of Scream. The HEK’s weaponry has a primitive feel too; let’s just say it’s not all about the knife. The psychological impact here is intense, whereas Ghostface represents an accessible kind of horror—the idea that the terror could come from familiar faces in your neighborhood. With HEK, the danger feels all the more palpable and overwhelming. If this were a different story, anyone would end up in trouble.
As for survival tips—it seems like physical fitness is key! After all, Chad has survived more stabbings than anyone would think possible.
ScreenRant: Olivia, your character Ally is embroiled in a misunderstanding regarding her relationship with Jay, portrayed by Mason. How does this misunderstanding impact the plot, and what was your favorite scene to film with him?
Olivia Holt: It fundamentally drives the story. Their initial misunderstanding forms the basis for how their romantic journey evolves.
As for filming, there were so many thrilling moments! I particularly loved our stunt sequences. We built a safe space for each other, especially during the long hours covered in ‘blood and sweat’.It was all part of the experience, and choosing a favorite is tough.
Mason Gooding: You’ve captured it well. The narrative twist that compels them to be seen as a couple, despite their actual dynamics, creates such tension with the Heart Eyes Killer. One of the standout moments was during a drive-in scene, where we had to navigate these difficult stunts while maintaining that character connection.
The Heart Eyes Killer: A Costume That Inspires Dread
“Seeing it on the body was a whole new different experience.”

ScreenRant: The presence of the HEK and their menacing look undeniably adds to the film’s tension. What was your impression upon seeing the costume, and did it impact the atmosphere on set?
Olivia Holt: Absolutely, the mask had a profound effect.
Mason Gooding: I’m a bit of a geek for set design, and the detailed craftsmanship of the mask, especially its eerie blood-red lipstick accents, is stunning. Even seeing it on the makeup table was unsettling!
Olivia Holt: The first time we laid eyes on the mask, it was both intriguing and frightening. When it was worn, it created an entirely new level of terror.
Mason Gooding: I was quite fortunate to have someone like Liv beside me—I’ll admit that I’m the kind of actor who gets spooked easily! The actor who donned the mask, Alex McCall, often played with our fear, heightening the overall experience. Horror completely captivates me, giving such visceral reactions; it is definitely my favorite genre.
