iFixit Reveals Increased Battery Size in M5 MacBook Pro Along with Minor Enhancements in Repairability Ratings

iFixit has released its highly anticipated teardown of the latest Apple M5 MacBook Pro, unveiling some notable findings that provide insight into the device’s design and repairability.

Teardown Insights: M5 MacBook Pro’s 72.6Wh Battery and Repair Challenges

According to iFixit’s teardown, several important points were highlighted:

  1. Apple’s updated repair guides now suggest a safer procedure for battery replacement by recommending the disconnection of the Battery Management System’s cable first. This precaution reduces the risk of short circuits while the battery is still connected.
  2. Despite these enhancements, replacing the battery in the M5 MacBook Pro remains a complicated task, necessitating the removal of multiple internal components.
  3. The latest iteration now features a 72.6Wh battery, a slight increase from the 72.4Wh capacity found in the M4 MacBook Pro.
  4. For most component replacements, technicians still need to detach the logic board, adding to the complexity.
  5. Screen replacement requires detaching the antenna bracket initially to access several tiny P2 screws.
  6. Access to battery pull tabs has improved, eliminating the need to remove the trackpad.
  7. The M5 MacBook Pro received a preliminary repairability score of 4 out of 10 from iFixit, which is slightly lower than the M4 MacBook Air’s score of 5 out of 10.

In other developments, recent tests revealed that the M5 MacBook Pro’s single fan and heatpipe cooling system struggled to maintain optimal temperatures during the rigorous Cinebench 2024 benchmarking test.

Nonetheless, it demonstrated improved thermal performance compared to its predecessor, recording an average core temperature of 98.95 degrees Celsius, which is an improvement over the M4 MacBook Pro’s 100.90 degrees Celsius average.
