“If you want it bad enough, fairytales do come true” – Fans delighted as Danielle Collins wins the biggest title of her career at Miami Open 2024

Despite a tough challenge from Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins emerged victorious in the 2024 Miami Open on Saturday, securing the most significant title of her career.

On March 30, Collins went up against last year’s runner-up and No. 4 seed Rybakina in the Miami title match. She displayed flawless gameplay and emerged victorious at the WTA 1000 tournament. In the first set, the American secured a late break of Rybakina’s serve, giving her the advantage. She then went on to break Rybakina’s serve two more times in the second set, ultimately winning the contest 7-5, 6-3 in a little over two hours.

In addition, Danielle Collins had a remarkable performance, saving 10 out of 11 breakpoints on her serve and achieving a higher first-serve percentage than Elena Rybakina. The victory of the American in this prestigious tournament, in her final year as a professional tennis player, left fans in awe. Collins had previously announced her retirement at the beginning of the year, stating her intention to focus on her personal life after the end of the 2024 season.

Collins’ victory at the tournament held in her home state was widely praised as a “fairytale”by many. Her tenacity and skillful game management in defeating Rybakina in the final were greatly admired. Some went as far as to suggest that her retirement plans should be reconsidered in light of her triumph.

“Man, what a story. Battling a chronic inflammatory disease, retiring at the end of the year, just won the biggest title of her career,”a fan tweeted.

“So happy for her. Great final game. Breaking the tension of it by shouting at her team to coach her and then telling them to shut up is both peak and vintage Collins,”wrote another fan.

“Danielle Collins’ emotional reaction as she wins the biggest title of her life. She drops her racquet & puts her hands over her face. In her last season on tour. In her home state. If you want it bad enough, fairytales do come true,”another tweet read.
