The Tragic Story of United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 experienced a harrowing episode that left an indelible mark on American history. This ill-fated flight was en route from Newark to San Francisco when it was hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists, mirroring the fate of three other flights that day.

The Hijackers’ Intentions

Four terrorists—Ziad Jarrah, Ahmed al-Haznawi, Ahmed al-Nami, and Saeed al-Ghamdi—sought to commandeer Flight 93 and crash it into a high-profile target such as the U.S. Capitol or the White House. Their nefarious plan was thwarted by the extraordinary resolve of the passengers and crew aboard the flight.

In 2006, filmmaker Paul Greengrass brought this poignant chapter of history to the silver screen with the film United 93. The movie has been widely praised for its documentary-style presentation, effectively capturing the narratives of the passengers and their families through thorough research and authentic portrayals.

Who Were the Hijackers?

The hijackers of United Flight 93 were part of the larger al-Qaeda network, a group composed of 19 terrorists under the leadership of Osama bin Laden.

Ziad Jarrah

Ziad Jarrah served as the pilot and orchestrator among the four hijackers. Originally from Lebanon, he had received flight training in the United States. Had the hijacking been successful, Jarrah was positioned to fly the plane into the intended target.

These three Saudi nationals played a pivotal role in maintaining control over the passengers onboard. As the muscle of the operation, they were tasked with keeping the passengers and crew subdued while securing the cockpit from any resistance.

The Brave Actions of Flight 93 Passengers

Approximately 46 minutes into the flight, the hijackers seized control of the cockpit, redirecting the plane toward Washington, D.C. In a desperate act to communicate, passengers found an Airfone and began reaching out to loved ones.

As they learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the passengers quickly understood the gravity of their situation and resolved to confront the hijackers. Their courageous efforts ultimately led to the plane’s crash into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania—preventing a catastrophic attack but costing them their lives.
