“I’d rather get old and do good roles”: Kirsten Dunst opens up on her Hollywood career in candid interview

During an interview with GQ, Kirsten Dunst spoke about her experiences in Hollywood while promoting the upcoming Civil War movie. The actress discussed topics such as motherhood, pressure to alter her appearance, being typecast, and inappropriate interactions she has faced with individuals in the industry throughout her career.

During the revealing interview, the 41-year-old actress shared that a Spider-Man producer once surprised her by taking her to the dentist to get her teeth aligned. Despite never altering her teeth, Dunst boldly stated that she always followed her own fashion rules, even when advised otherwise.

According to the Marie Antoinette actress, wearing a black punk-styled dress and dark lipstick caused Sony to raise their eyebrows. Dunst gave her opinion on the matter:

“They wanted me to look like a s*xy young woman who would appeal to a broader range of whoever gets seats in the theatre.”

The actress further disclosed that director Sofia Coppola, an industry legend, admired her teeth. This influenced her decision to refrain from altering her facial features in any manner. Kirsten Dunst elaborated:

“I still know to this day, I’m not gonna screw up my face and look like a freak. You know what I mean? I’d rather get old and do good roles.”

Kirsten Dunst reflects on breaking out of typecasting and her journey in the entertainment industry

The recipient of the Cannes Film Awards is highly conscious of her exceptional ability and has disclosed that she purposefully chooses her projects.

Despite talking about the lack of quality roles available, Dunst pointed out that she has been involved in the film industry since the age of three. She noted that most individuals who have been in the industry for as long as she has would have already retired, leading her to believe that she has earned the right to be selective in her choices.

During the interview, Kirsten Dunst revealed that she frequently received offers for melancholic roles after her performance in Melancholia. In order to avoid being typecast, the actress made a conscious decision to pursue comedic roles. Emphasizing her desire to showcase her versatility as an actress, Dunst stated:

“I feel like, at this point in my life, I can play anything. I’m not afraid. I’d rather do something weird and off-kilter, and work with a first-time director, than do anything middle of the road, because I would just be depressed doing that.”

As the discussion continued, the artist also showed enthusiasm for the possibility of a remake of the cult-classic film Bring It On. Kirsten Dunst added that since Mean Girls had already received a new version, it was only fair for the Peyton Reed-directed film to also be brought back to the forefront.

Despite facing misogyny in the industry, Kirsten Dunst openly discussed the challenges she has encountered. Among them was being referred to as a “girly girl”by a Spider-Man assistant director in a derogatory manner. However, Dunst bravely confronted the person and he defended himself by claiming that the phrase was meant to be endearing.

During the interview, Kirsten Dunst opened up about a difficult experience she had while growing up, recalling an incident where a director asked her something inappropriate when she was a teenager. She further elaborated on the incident, stating:

“It was really not a cool question to ask. You can only imagine. That was the worst thing that ever happened to me… I just am not going to put up with anything. You grow up and learn how to navigate it when people abuse power. But I never had anything truly horrendous happen to me. I was never put in rooms alone with someone that could do anything weird.”

In addition to appearing on magazine covers, Kirsten Dunst has also been actively promoting Civil War, a dystopian film directed by Alex Garland. The movie centers around a team of military-embedded journalists who must race to reach Washington, D.C. before rebels attack the White House.

The movie, which will be released in April, will also feature Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, and Jefferson White, alongside other talented actors.
