On October 31, a document suggesting Han So-hee’s actual birth year surfaced online, sparking considerable debate among netizens. The record indicated that the popular South Korean actress was born in 1993, contradictory to the widely accepted date of 1994.
In response to the confusion, Han So-hee issued an explanation through the media outlet Ten Asia, clarifying the discrepancy regarding her birth year. She revealed that the mix-up stemmed from the fact that she had to repeat the fourth grade, leading to the incorrect recording of her birth year.
Han elaborated that shortly before she was to begin fourth grade, her family was forced to relocate due to her mother facing legal troubles. As a result, she spent a year out of school. After her mother’s imprisonment, she returned to her hometown of Wonju and re-entered the fourth grade.
This event ultimately set her back a formative year in schooling. According to her agency, 9Ato Entertainment, her birth year was falsely recorded as 1994 owing to her mother’s history of conflict with the law. Here is a direct quote from her statement:
“When I was about to enter fourth grade, I was forcibly taken to Ulsan due to my mother’s being wanted by the authorities. I then spent a year at home without attending school, and after my mother was incarcerated, I returned to Wonju and re-enrolled in the fourth grade.”
Understanding the Legal Issues Surrounding Han So-hee’s Mother
On September 2, reports from TV Chosun revealed that Han So-hee’s mother was arrested on charges related to illegal gambling operations. Allegations suggest she had managed over a dozen gambling dens across various cities, including Ulsan and Wonju, since 2021.
This is not her mother’s first encounter with the law. She has previously faced accusations concerning scams and other illegal activities. Nevertheless, Han So-hee maintains minimal contact with her mother, having been raised by her grandmother since the age of five.
After her parents’ divorce, she reportedly severed most ties with her mother post-high school graduation. Nonetheless, the actress has publicly expressed remorse for her mother’s actions. In a heartfelt apology letter in 2020, she reached out to individuals who might have been impacted by her mother’s misconduct, hoping that such circumstances would not repeat.
“After I debuted, I got in contact with the debtors and learned that my mother borrowed money using my name and job as her shield, and did not pay it back. The amount she borrowed using my name and thus the amount of debt I carried was just too large to bear.”
Han also mentioned that she took steps to repay the debts incurred by her mother in her name and began working towards financial independence even prior to her acting career.
As new stories about Han So-hee’s past and personal life emerge, fans have shown their support and empathy towards her situation.
